Visitors to the 1981 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt were able to marvel at the successor to the first VW Polo series. The hatchback variant, comparable to an estate car, was initially the only model available. The generous boot could be transformed into a spacious loading area by folding down the rear bench. In February 1982, VW expanded the model series with the new edition of the ‘Derby’ notchback variant. In August of the same year, the coupé followed as the third body variant. The newly developed 1.3-litre engine with 55 kW (75 PS) was initially only available for the Coupé in the new GT trim level. The top-of-the-range Polo GT model with 75 PS has widened wings and 155/70 R13 tyres, twin headlights and sports seats as standard to emphasise the sporty character of this Polo. Technically, the Polo GT has a more robust chassis. To this day, the coupé is the most popular body variant of all Polos.
