The history of this legendary car begins in 1953, and many sources claim that GAZ 21 is a copy of Ford. Many details of the latest American cars (Plymouth Savoy, Ford Mainline and Chevrolet Styline Deluxe) were taken into consideration during the entire process of creating the GAZ 21. And some of these details can actually be found in the design as well as in the construction of “Volga”. In 1958, the Volga actually got a “second life”. The modernization of the model mainly concerned its appearance. It was one of the most outstanding representatives of the 20th century car industry, which was able to win the hearts of millions of people. Instead of the old angular shapes, the appearance of “Volga” became more elegant and modern. The radiator grille (nicknamed “whalebone”), consisted of 37 pillars and the rear light, which illuminated the license plate, had the shape of a flying seagull. No wonder that “Volga” was awarded the status of “The best car of the 60s” by 1962.
