The Audi Coupé (Type 89) is a sports coupé based on one of the best cars the Audi brand has ever produced, the Audi 80 B3 (also Type 89), which was manufactured from fall 1988 to the end of 1996. Although the sports coupé was built on the same platform, it was nevertheless a completely new development. Instead of a staid notchback, it featured a large, glass tailgate. A high level of body rigidity was achieved by reinforcing the side sills. This enabled the designers to create a narrow roofline.
Initially, the Audi Coußé was only available with a five-cylinder engine, the now cult 2.3E with 136 hp and a 20V four-valve engine with 170 hp. Alongside the Quattro all-wheel drive, these sonorous five-cylinder engines were Audi’s image-defining statements, “Vorsprung durch Technik”.
