In 1970, the Renault 12 Gordini succeeded a legend: the Renault 8 Gordini in its heyday. Although it adopted the blue color and white stripes of the legend, the Renault 12 Gordini did not follow the same philosophy. The R12 Gordini has a front engine with front-wheel drive, while its predecessor favored everything at the rear.
The Renault 12 Gordini is the first front-wheel drive Renault to enter the race with such a high level of performance. Its engine is a 4-cylinder petrol engine of 1,565 cm3, derived from that of the Renault 16 TS, and produces 113 hp DIN at 6,250 rpm.
On July 19, 1970, Renault organizes G Day: all owners of a Renault Gordini, Renault Dauphine or Renault 8 are invited to a big automotive party at the Castellet circuit. In the presence of Amédée Gordini himself and numerous drivers, the presentation of the new Renault 12 Gordini marked the end of this gathering. This event, which has been likened to Woodstock, will live long in the memory. Thousands of cars came from all over Europe to attend the first race on the Paul Ricard circuit.
