The history of the Lancia Delta began back in 1974 on the basis of the Fiat Ritmo. The well-known Italian designer, Giorgetto Giugiaro, was responsible for the body shape. Production initially began in 1979 at the Fiat plant in Lingotto. At the end of 1981, production was transferred to the Lancia plant in Chivasso. At the Turin Motor Show in 1982, Lancia presented a Delta prototype with all-wheel drive. Initially equipped with the 1300 and 1500 cc engines from the Fiat Ritmo, the Lancia Delta was fitted with the sophisticated 1585 cc Twin Cam engine designed by Aurelio Lampredi in 1983. The Delta 1600 GT with 105 hp made its debut, soon to be joined by a 130 hp turbo version, which was to bear the glorious abbreviation HF. The name HF goes back to the “Lancia Hi-Fi” club, which brought together passionate owners of the prestigious Turin cars. Lancia was not unprepared when the FIA (International Automobile Federation) changed the rules for car racing in 1987. Production of the Lancia Delta HF 4WD began in 1986. Already at its debut at the 1987 Monte Carlo Rally, the Delta HF 4WD won the first of six World Rally Championships from 1987 to 1992 by an overwhelming margin. Many technical and visual changes in special series and exclusive editions make the models valuable collector’s items for enthusiasts and racing fans, with models easily reaching six-digit sales prices.
