When the Ford Escort was launched in Germany in August 1968, the debutant was affectionately christened the “dog bone” by motorists due to its front end – the start of a remarkable automotive success story that ended in 1998 after a total of 30 years and seven Escort generations. The Ford Escort also celebrated one triumph after another in motorsport – no car in Ford’s history to date has been more successful on race and rally tracks.
Its success was no accident: the functional beauty of the successful bodywork made the Escort a bestseller in England and on the export markets. Ford was able to establish the Escort throughout Europe from the very first edition. As the first model built by the US company outside America, the first generation produced by the end of 1974 reached a circulation of two million. The first Escort generation sold a total of 2.14 million units, although only 234,000 of these found German buyers. Perhaps one reason why Ford Cologne played a decisive role in the development of the Escort MK II presented in 1975
