Whereas the superseded model was offered exclusively with 6-cylinder engines, Mercedes had planned the new model with enough space under the hood for larger engines, certainly with a view to the North American market – and it was precisely there that the SL was highly successful. Over a period of 18 years, a total of 237,287 convertibles were built at the main plant in Sindelfingen, most of them with V8 engines of varying displacement as the 350, 380, 420, 450, 500 and 560 SL. 6-cylinder models supplemented the range, initially as the 280 SL from 1974 to 1985 and later as the 300 SL from 1985 to 1989.
Thanks to continuous innovation over the many model years, the R107 set numerous standards. When it was finally replaced by the R129 in 1989, it was already poised to become one of the eternal automobile classics.
