In 1974, Volkswagen presented the Golf – a great improvement over its predecessor, the Beetle, with its air-cooled rear-mounted engine. The Golf was a front-wheel drive car from the start, with water-cooled, transversely mounted engines – and a huge success. When the 3rd generation was introduced in 1991, it had once again become larger and significantly heavier. With the Golf VR6, a new attractive market niche was occupied. The 2.8 litre six-cylinder engine in a V-shape, with an unusually narrow angle of 15 degrees, was taken from the Passat series and was at the time the only passenger car in the compact class with a six-cylinder engine. This engine is a “two-valve”, which does not draw its power from high revs, but rather develops its power at low revs, casually. The Golf VR6 is a real Golf, too. There is no question of overpowering or exaggerated sportiness. The drive and chassis behave harmoniously with a high degree of driving safety. The so-called plus front axle in combination with the electronic differential lock, EDS, swallows up the suspected drive influences. Likewise the traction problems to be expected with powerful front-wheel-drive vehicles. The VR6 is a Golf that combines maximum driving pleasure with its six-cylinder engine and its comfort characteristics.
