In 1961, production of these great vehicles of the series W111, of which the French liked to refer to as “Grand Routier”, began with the 220 SE Coupé. After that, engine sizes and prices of the coupes just kept going up. The 250 SE, 280 SE and 300 SE followed. Shortly before the end of the production, Mercedes introduced the splendid 350 SE engine with 200 hp. This V8 engine was later deployed over many years in the 350 SE, SL and SLC. According to the pundits, it is one of the best engines that Mercedes has ever built.
As a precursor to the W116, the front of the vehicle was equipped with a lower radiator grille, now referred to as “flat radiator coupe”. The 220 SEb / C was the first mass-production Mercedes car with disc brakes on the front wheelsIn the 280 SE 3.5 Coupé, this engine was offered for only one model year, hence the small number of units. Since it is precisely this engine that turns the luxury coupe into a “Gentleman’s Express”, connoisseurs and collectors prefer this version.
