A young Dustin Hoffman drives hundreds of miles – accompanied by a Simon & Garfunkel soundtrack – in a red convertible: if you are one of the millions of people who have seen the 1967 feature film “The Graduate”, you will probably remember the scene. It was an early example of successful product placement, and the car in question was an Alfa Romeo Spider “Duetto” that had been released the year before. And had come to stay: The roadster remained in production with only minor modifications for almost 3 decades, making it one of the most recognizable convertibles of all time. The first generation Alfa Romeo Spider (1966 – 1969) had an elongated round rear. The Alfa Romeo 1300 Spider Junior was introduced in June 1968 to compete against the cheaper Fiat 124 Spider. The majority of the approximately 4,500 Junior models built made their way across the pond to the land of opportunity.
