Retro remains the trend: in 2011, based on the PQ35 platform, The Beetle follows the New Beetle. In April 2011, Volkswagen AG unveiled the new Beetle as “The 21st Century Beetle” ahead of the Shanghai Motor Show. The new model will roll off the production line at the same location as its predecessor and forebear, the legendary Mexico Beetle, in Puebla, Mexico. Compared with its predecessor, the new model does away with the domed roof, and the space available has increased, particularly in the rear and the luggage compartment. Engine options range from the 1.2-liter TSI gasoline engine with 77 kW (105 hp) to the most powerful engine with 147 kW (200 hp), or with 118 kW (160 hp). The top versions have an XDS electronic differential lock as standard, which enables better handling when cornering. The three equipment variants “Beetle”, “Design” and “Sport” could be supplemented with additional details. For example, the extra-large panoramic glass roof, a Hanschuhfachklappe painted in the exterior color in reference to the “Urkäfer” or the iconic holding loops for passengers.
On April 29, 2017, imports for the German market officially end. On July 10, 2019, an era comes to an end and the last Beetle rolls off the production line.
