The Volkswagen Corrado presented in 1988 was intended to be a cheaper successor to the VW Scirocco II. However, even during the development phase it was established that the “Scirocco III” could not be offered at a lower price and so the Corrado became an independent sports coupe and technology carrier. Originally the vehicle was called “Taifun”. As this carried negative connotations, the name was changed to Corrado, which was derived from the Spanish word for “to run”. The “runner” was above all robust, suitable for everyday use and had a good supply of spare parts. A special feature of the car was the rear wing, which extended automatically at speeds above 120 km/h. An increase in power output from the unchanged displacement was made possible by the G-loader in the G60. Extraordinary for that time was the equipment of the Corrado with power steering, ABS and fog lights as standard. In 1991, models with 16V and VR6 engines were offered, and one year later a facelift brought a re-designed interior. In 1995 the last VW Corrado left the production factory. The model remains in memory as a combination of sportiness and usability.
