Land Rover Series 3 production began in 1971 and ended in 1985, and about halfway through Series 3 pro-duction, the 1,000,000 Land Rover rolled off the Solihull assembly line in 1976. Basically, the 3 was a facelift of the Series 2/2a. The most obvious difference between the Series II and III was the introduction of a modified grille and a revised interior. The headlights were moved to the front fenders and the stylized plastic grille was revised. The Series 3 hood was redesigned with a rounded leading edge and a recessed spare tire. The new Series III interior featured a slightly less spartan dashboard. The instruments were moved from the center of the dash directly in front of the driver. The revised interior and fully synchronized transmission accommodated the fact that the competition was catching up, and the introduction of the overdrive transmission suited those who needed their Land Rovers for serious road work. The long wheelbase vehicles were equipped with the more powerful Salisbury rear axle. The Lucas alternator (dynamo) was replaced by an alternator. Thus a frequent weak point was eliminated, which also led to the fact that Lucas was ironically called “Lord of Darkness”. The last Series III rolled off the production line in 1985.
