An attractive daily driver with potential

Ferdinand Piech was the driving force behind the “Audi premier league” project. The new luxury class was to be powered by a V8 engine without any restrictions. Quote from his “Auto” biography from 2002: “Obviously, there is no substitute for more cylinders. I didn’t want to make the mistake of opening the top league with an engine that was too small”. The Audi V8 was developed on the basis of the Audi 100 C3. About 90 % of the fully galvanised body was redesigned. From autumn 1988, the Ingolstadt manufacturer competed with the Audi V8 against the established suppliers in the passenger car luxury segment. The Audi V8 was the first German limousine with permanent four-wheel drive and a four-speed automatic gearbox. The eight-cylinder engine is equipped with four overhead camshafts and 32 valves. The engine block and cylinder heads are made of aluminium. The quattro all-wheel drive system distributes the engine’s power proportionally 50:50 to the front and rear axles. If necessary, the electronically controlled power transmission activates the longitudinal lock, so that up to 100 % of the torque is delivered to one axle. The comfortable equipment of this first luxury class, the best fabrics or leather, root wood, is of high quality. Audi also entered motorsport with the V8 saloon. In its very first year, 1990, Hans-Joachim Stuck won the DTM championship.
