In 1974, Volkswagen presented the Golf – a great improvement on its predecessor, the Beetle, with its air-cooled rear-mounted engine. Right from the start, the Golf was a front-wheel drive car, with water-cooled, transversely mounted engines – and a huge success. After nine years, the second generation was introduced in 1983. The characteristic shape and basic concept remained untouched, but the new series was somewhat more rounded and considerably larger: 5.5 cm wider and a full 28 cm longer! The engine selection was wide: it started at 40 kW (55 hp) as the base model and ranged up to 118 kW (160 hp) in the GTI G60 at the end of the production range. A total of about 6.4 million Golf IIs were built and led the registration statistics in many countries. Even today, the “two-person Golf” is still a familiar sight on German roads, thanks to effective rust prevention and superior build quality.
A small series (100 units) of the Golf II was built as the “citySTROMer” electric car. Interestingly, there was no factory convertible, so the Golf I Cabrio (1980 – 1993) completely outlasted the Golf II.
