If there is one car that has been appreciated by novice drivers and professional racers alike, it is the “Little Friend”, Renault’s successful model with the simple type designation “5”. In the 70s Renault introduced a racing series with this car. For a long time, the GT Turbo version was the fastest production compact car. The street version of the R5, on the other hand, was produced from 1972 to 1996 mostly as a cheap everyday vehicle. Even the first generation had a monocoque body and had a 0.8-litre four-cylinder engine as its basic engine. Initially, this model was only available as a three-door, but from 1979 a five-door version was added. Altogether there were different engine variants such as the sporty “Alpine”, “Turbo” or “GTL” – with rear window wiper/washer system and sports seats. The last version, Maxi 5 Turbo, produced an amazing 300 kW (408 PS). 1984 saw the start of production of the second generation, called “Supercinq” (Super 5) with a transversely mounted engine in the front. As before, more beefy versions were also on offer, including the GT Turbo. In 1987, the small car received a facelift, recognizable by the modified radiator grill with the brand rhombus shifted to the left. At the end of the construction period, many special models such as “Flash”, “Primus” and “Prima” appeared with additional equipment. Between 1986 and 1991 the Belgian company EBS produced 1,400 units of a convertible version. All in all, a total of over 9 million “little friends” rolled off the production line.
