On 17 June 1970 the British automobile manufacturer Land Rover introduced the Range Rover model. The first generation, nowadays known as “Classic”, was produced until 1996. Its prototype was called VELAR, derived from “V8 Land Rover”. The pioneer among the SUVs was already at that time fully all-terrain, which was made possible by the combination of 3.5 litre V8 engine, permanent all-wheel drive and coil suspension. The off-road vehicle was initially offered as a three-door model. Apart from the 167 limited models produced by the Swiss company Monteverdi, the five-door model was only introduced in 1981. Four years later, the Range Rover received its first modifications, including intake manifold injection and, in 1988, an increase in displacement to 3.9 litres. The off-road vehicle is distinguished by the fact that a first-generation model was exhibited in the famous Louvre as an example of modern industrial art.
It is worth mentioning that in 1971, two Range Rovers took part in the British Trans-Americas expedition from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. “The Pioneer” also won the first Paris – Dakar rally in 1979.
