The other great Porsche
This was supposed to be the heir to the throne, successor to the forever-young 911, which in the late 1960s was thought to be way past its prime, with not much of a future ahead. Hence a radically different layout was favoured: The new top-of-the-range model was designed to be a luxury touring car, with a powerful watercooled V8 engine in the front, providing 176 kW (240 hp) from 4,5 l of displacement, and a transaxle layout, which enabled a weight distribution of nearly 50/50 (front/rear). The 928 debuted in 1977 at the Geneva Motor show. In 1978, it won the coveted “European Car of the Year” award, as the first sports car ever – a clear indication of just how advanced the 928 was both technically, as well as with regards to styling. Many Porsche enthusiasts, however, greeted the 928 with something ranging from suspicion to downright rejection, as the 911 continued to sell. Nevertheless, the 928 became a success in its own right, with a construction period of no less than 18 years. Later models featured a 5.4 litre engine with up to 257 kW (350 hp). Only about 1/5 of all 928 came with a manual gearbox!

The successor to the very popular E30 was presented in 1990 as the third generation of BMW’s 3 series. Internally called E36, the new sedan was considerably larger (and pricier) than its predecessor. It introduced completely new styling cues, such as the glass covers over the traditional double headlights, the forward-slanting kidney grille or the higher rear section. There were a variety of available body styles: The 2-door sedan had become an elegant coupé which shared very few parts with the 4-door variant. A shorter hatchback called Compact was added in 1994. In 1995, the Touring station wagon followed. A factory convertible as well as the (rare) Baur convertible, offered in the E36 series for the last time, and the Z3 roadster (E36/7), based on the E36 Compact platform, made the lineup complete.
The choice of engines was huge, with no petrol engine producing less than 73 kW (100 hp). Top of the range was the M3, which in 1992 offered 210 kW (286 hp) from a 3.0 litre engine, later being replaced by a 3.2 litre, 236 kW (321 hp) powerplant in 1997. 4- and 6-cylinder diesel engines were also available. The E36 was built totalling 2.5 million units at the BMW plants in Munich, Regensburg, Dingolfing as well as at the newly built Spartanburg factory in the US.

In 1974, Volkswagen presented the Golf – a great improvement on its predecessor, the Beetle, with its air-cooled rear-mounted engine. Right from the start, the Golf was a front-wheel drive car, with water-cooled, transversely mounted engines – and a huge success. After nine years, the second generation was introduced in 1983. The characteristic shape and basic concept remained untouched, but the new series was somewhat more rounded and considerably larger: 5.5 cm wider and a full 28 cm longer. When the 3rd generation was introduced in 1991, it had again become larger and significantly heavier. The “Variant” station wagon version was available from 1994. A new convertible was also launched, so that the Golf I Cabrio could finally be retired after 13 years.
For the Golf III, the engine range started at 1.4 liters and extended to the mighty 2.9 liter VR6, which produced 142 kW (193 hp). Many Golf IIIs were sold with the new turbodiesel direct injection (TDI) engine, which was offered from 1993 and revised in 1996. Unfortunately, the “3 Series Golf” could not quite match its predecessor in terms of rust prevention and build quality.

Retro remains the trend: in 2011, based on the PQ35 platform, The Beetle follows the New Beetle. In April 2011, Volkswagen AG unveiled the new Beetle as “The 21st Century Beetle” ahead of the Shanghai Motor Show. The new model will roll off the production line at the same location as its predecessor and forebear, the legendary Mexico Beetle, in Puebla, Mexico. Compared with its predecessor, the new model does away with the domed roof, and the space available has increased, particularly in the rear and the luggage compartment. Engine options range from the 1.2-liter TSI gasoline engine with 77 kW (105 hp) to the most powerful engine with 147 kW (200 hp), or with 118 kW (160 hp). The top versions have an XDS electronic differential lock as standard, which enables better handling when cornering. The three equipment variants “Beetle”, “Design” and “Sport” could be supplemented with additional details. For example, the extra-large panoramic glass roof, a Hanschuhfachklappe painted in the exterior color in reference to the “Urkäfer” or the iconic holding loops for passengers.
On April 29, 2017, imports for the German market officially end. On July 10, 2019, an era comes to an end and the last Beetle rolls off the production line.

– 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL from the R 129 series
– originally delivered in the US, brought new to Japan and first registered in May 1992
– re-imported to Germany in 2019
– exterior in black with anthracite leather interior in a well-kept condition
– owner’s manual and original warranty certificate
– body-coloured hard top included
– maintenance and service reports available

At the 1989 Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz presented the new SL from the R129 series. Its predecessor had been on the market for no less than 18 years, so the target group was more than ready for the new car and received it enthusiastically – so much so that early customers had to put up with a delivery period of several years. The aerodynamical wedge-shape design by Bruno Sacco won the international “Car Design Award”. Technologically, the new SL was very advanced, especially with regards to its safety features. They comprised a sensor-controlled automatic roll-over bar which would be raised within 0.3 seconds if needed, as well as integral seats.
The fabric top mechanism was no longer manually operated as it had been in the R107, but electrohydraulically, it opened and closed within 30 seconds. The aluminium hardtop weighed about 10 kg less than the one of its predecessor.
The R129 was available with a variety of engines, from 2.8 litres of capacity all the way up to 7.3 litres in the rare AMG V12 variants. A total of 204,940 examples were built over the course of 12 years, with two facelifts in 1995 and 1998, most of them equipped with V8 engines.

In the summer of 1984, the public was able to admire the new Kadett GSI at the Paris Motor Show. Based on the technical design of its predecessor, the Kadett D with front-wheel drive but with a new hatchback body, it was voted “Car of the Year 1984”. Two years later, the Kadett GSi could also be ordered as a five-door model. After only a short time, customers accepted the new shape and the Kadett E began to soar, achieving 625,000 new registrations throughout Europe in 1987. The Caravan had long since become the load master of all classes. In the fall of 1985, for the first time since the Kadett C, there was also a variant with a notchback. The GSi finally became an icon when, starting in 1988, it left the competition behind with its pioneering 150-hp 16-valve engine, the first Opel large-series engine with four valves per cylinder. The Kadett D was already the best compact with a drag coefficient of 0.39. The body of the E model was optimized in the wind tunnel and achieved a sensational 0.32. The sporty GSI with a coefficient of 0.30 became the most streamlined sedan in the world. This sixth generation Opel Kadett was the last generation before the introduction of the Astra models. The GSI (Grand Sport Injection) designation was very popular and continues to be used by Opel today.

– 3.0 litre 6-cylinder engine with132 kW (179 hp) and manual gearbox
– taiga green metallic exterior paint with beige velours interior
– 3 owners from new, 2 of them within the same family

For some people it is one of the most desirable BMW coupés of all times: the “New Six” CS, internally called E9, which was presented in 1968. It was based on the New Class coupé (2000 C / 2000 CS), but featured a longer wheelbase and longer engine bay, as well as a front resembling the then-new E3 luxury sedans. While all of this contributed to giving the coupé a more elegant appearance, its choice of engines also helped to increase the appeal of the E9 as BMW’s top-of-the-range coupé: The M30 straight-6 cylinder engine was offered with originally 2.8, later 3.0 litres of capacity and a power output of up to 151 kW (206 hp), just like in the E3 sedans. The elegant body was built by Karmann at Osnabrück.
Unforgotten are the successes of the E9 on the racing track, where the lightweight version 3.0 CSL secured many victories. The cars had as of 1973 been given a bizarre-looking aerodynamic package which earned it the nickname “Batmobile”.
The E9 was discontinued in 1975 when it was replaced by the E24 “6-series”, but went on to dominate racing until 1979. With 30,546 units built, it had outsold its predecessors by far.
