The most iconic transporter of all time!

Few vehicles, let alone vans or minibuses have gained a bigger “cult status” than the VW T2, affectionately known as “The Bus”. The popularity of the rounded panel van is unbroken, if you want evidence, all you need is one ride on The Bus through any city, anywhere: Wherever you go, you will receive spontaneous expressions of sympathy.

In 1967, the T2 became heir to the T1, the original version of the VW van which had been built for 17 years. The curved, undivided windscreen was the most prominent distinguishing feature of the “new one”. Further changes were the extended body (with wheelbase unaltered), the ball joint front axle and more powerful engines that delivered 47, later up to 70 hp to the rear axle. In Germany, over 2.5 million T2 were produced until 1979, as panel van, station wagon, flatbed, double cab, van or camper. In Mexico and Brazil, the popular Van with its pleasing shape continued to roll off the line for decades longer, with production ending as late as 2013 – by which time the “local” T2 had long since matured to classic cars.

Mercedes-Benz 300 SL-24

– Mercedes-Benz 300 SL from R129 series, pre-facelift model from 1992
– German delivery, no US import
– with the last keeper since 2008
– mechanically and cosmetically well-maintained non-smoker car
– electrically adjustable, heated seats, cruise control, airbag, power windows
– original CD radio, Nokia carphone with hands-free equipment
– blue metallic paintwork, body coloured hard top, blue soft top and blue leather interior
– German registration documents
– at 25 years of age, a very well matured car on the verge of becoming a true classic

At the 1989 Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz presented the new SL from the R129 series. Its predecessor had been on the market for no less than 18 years, so the target group was more than ready for the new car and received it enthusiastically – so much so that early customers had to put up with a delivery period of several years. The aerodynamical wedge-shape design by Bruno Sacco won the international “Car Design Award”. Technologically, the new SL was very advanced, especially with regards to its safety features. They comprised a sensor-controlled automatic roll-over bar which would be raised within 0.3 seconds if needed, as well as integral seats.

The fabric top mechanism was no longer manually operated as it had been in the R107, but electrohydraulically, it opened and closed within 30 seconds. The aluminium hardtop weighed about 10 kg less than the one of its predecessor.

The R129 was available with a variety of engines, from 2.8 litres of capacity all the way up to 7.3 litres in the rare AMG V12 variants. A total of 204,940 examples were built over the course of 12 years, with two facelifts in 1995 and 1998, most of them equipped with V8 engines.

Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396

“This one is not for V8 novices”, the consignor warned. You’d think a 3.8 litre V8 was a large engine? Well, this one has more than twice its capacity! No less than a whopping 7.7 litre – or 467 cui – is what this 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle boasts, turning what once was an already powerful Chevelle 396 SS into the Schwarzenegger of muscle cars. The engine – a bored-out Chevy big block from a 1978 pick-up – has been completely and carefully refurbished with plenty of new parts by Chevrolet pundit Mark Jones. The Chevelle has, according to the previous owner, undergone a thorough restoration over the past five years. All work has been documented and the receipts are available. Corrosion protection measures have been taken and the paintwork is in near-new condition. The black leatherette interior presents itself in a very clean and well-kept state. Alle axle parts, drive shafts and the differential have been expertly overhauled and worn parts have been replaced. The same can be said about the brake system. Chrome parts and window seals were also attended to during the restoration and a completely new exhaust system has been fitted. A recent classic car appraisal estimates the Chevelle’s market value at € 45,000 (condition: 2+).
The car has German registration documents, valid technical approval until 09/2016 and historic plates.
Beauty and the Beast? Here you can have both, rolled in one.

The Chevelle was a mid-sized car – by American standards – built by Chevrolet over three generations from 1963 to 1977. Although available in a variety of body styles including 2- and 4-door sedans and station wagons, it was the sporty 2-door coupe or hardtop versions that made it immensely popular, in particular with younger buyers, not least due to a competitive pricing strategy. Poised to challenge other muscle cars of its era such as the Ford Fairlane, the Chevelle became one of Chevrolet’s best selling cars of its time. There was a huge choice of engines, up to 9 ranging from a 3.8 litre straight six up to a 7.4 litre V8, and various types of manual and automatic transmissions.
A popular gimmick, available for the more upmarket SS versions of the Chevelle, was the so-called “Cowl Induction” hood, which had a flap on the bonnet that would open when the accelerator was pressed, to increase the air intake into the carburettors.
With a power output of up to 270 kW (360 hp) in stock configuration, the Chevelle was more than just adequately powered. 1970 advertising depicted a red Chevelle SS 396 bound by bull rope and stakes, with the slogan: “Other cars wish we’d keep it this way”.

The vehicles colloquially referred to as “little tail fin” of the W 110 series were produced from 1961 to 1968. They belonged to the upper middle class of Mercedes and replaced the ponton series W120 / 121. Body, interior and luggage room sizes are substantially identical to the W111 series (“large tail fin”), which had entered the market in 1959.

All models have an unusual instrument panel with vertical roller speedometer (“clinical thermometer speedo”), where the display varies depending on the speed from yellow through red / yellow to red. All models also have the filler neck located behind the rear license plate, which folds down to allow access.

The body was characterized by a hitherto unknown passive safety: It had for the first time a stable passenger cell and effective deformable zones. Mercedes conducted extensive crash tests, in which a vehicle was pushed over a ramp at 80 km/h in order to make it roll over.

The Pagoda – a design classic par excellence!

When presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963, the W113 had the difficult task of replacing two models at a time, the 190 SL as well as the 300 SL. A task that was almost equivalent to the quadrature of the circle, but was solved brilliantly. Because of its smooth surfaces, the spacious interior and the absence of decorative elements, it came across as very “masculine” and made the predecessors with their rounded styling look outdated.

It was available as 230 SL (1963-1967), 250 SL (1967) and 280 SL (1968-1971), built with either manual or automatic transmission, to a total of 48,912 vehicles. Because of its slightly concave hardtop, available as an accessory, it was nicknamed Pagoda.

The W113 was suitable for any occasion – be it for the opera, the golf course or the small shopping – and the main thing: it looked good on you!

The original pony car – a legend takes its course
The Mustang was a trendsetter – the “pony cars” were not named after it for nothing. Typical features of the genre are the elongated hood, a comparatively short rear end, enough space for 4 people – but above all, engines with more power than the suspension and braking system could handle… Even in the Mustang of the first series, this could be up to 400 hp from a displacement of almost 7 liters.
The Ford Mustang Eleanor is one of the most famous cars in movie history: The Eleanor.
The Mustang Fastback conversion from the movie “Gone in 60 seconds” from the year 2000.
The Eleanor Mustangs shown in the movie were not real Shelby GT500s. In reality, they were a customized Mustang Fastback based on the GT500 and visually enhanced.
When master thief Randall “Memphis” (Nicolas Cage) caresses the rear of his Eleanor in the movie, fans of American muscle cars are thrilled.
“It’s going to be a drive, Eleanor. We’ll just glide along,” whispers Cage to the car.

Sir William Lyons’ iconic XJ had been on the market for nearly three decades by the time Jaguar finally unveiled the successor model, named XJ40. Compared to its predecessor, the new Jaguar featured a more angular styling. It also brought an improved build quality, and the manufacturing process had been optimized for greater efficiency. The XJ40 remained in production until 1994, when it was replaced by the X300 – which re-introduced the more curvaceous looks of the original XJ while being mechanically similar to the XJ40. In 1997, in a significant break with company tradition, both the inline-6 cylinder as well as the V12 engine were phased out, and a new V8 introduced to replace them. The facelifted car was appropriately named X308. The V8 engine came in two sizes, with 3.2 or 4.0 litres of capacity, the latter also available in combination with a supercharger. All cars had an automatic 5-speed transmission. As was customary, Jaguar also offered Daimler and Vanden Plas variants of their luxury sedan.
Total production figures for these Jaguars amount to just over 200,000 units of the XJ40, 92,000 of the X300 and 126,000 for the X308, including the respective submodels.

No matter how much you liked your VW, if you wanted a larger car in the 1950s – but no van – you had to look elsewhere, as the company had nothing to offer. This changed when VW presented the 1500, internally called Type 3, in 1961. It followed the basic engineering principle of the beetle, meaning it had an air-cooled engine in the rear, which in this case was a 1.5 litre flat-four with a power output of 33 kW (45 hp). Owing to the reduced height of the engine, there was some luggage space in the back, supplementing the main luggage compartment under the front bonnet, which also was significantly larger than that of the beetle. Body styles included a two-door sedan and station wagon, called Variant, and as of 1965, a fastback coupé, the TL. A 1.6 litre engine was added to the lineup, and in 1967, the VW 1600 E became the first German production car to feature an electronic fuel injection, the Bosch D-Jetronic.
For the 1969 facelift the front was lengthened by 12 cm, further increasing luggage capacity. The “long snout” remained in production until 1973 when it was replaced by the all-new Passat. All in all, over 2.5 million units of the Type 3 were built, almost half of them were station wagons.

After about 5 years of development, Mercedes-Benz presented the successor to its R 129 series at the 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show. With this car, designed by Steve Mattin and Bruno Sacco and internally referred to as R 230, the popular and prestigious SL went into its fifth generation. Unlike its predecessors, the new SL did no longer feature a soft top. Instead, it came with the “vario roof” first seen on the smaller SLK, a retractable aluminium roof which opened and closed within 16 seconds. Customers could choose between V6, V8 and V12 engines ranging from 3.0 to 6.2 litres of capacity – but the engine with the largest displacement was not the one with the most cylinders. Power output started at 170 kW (231 hp) in the SL 280 / SL 300 and peaked at 493 kW (670 hp) in the SL AMG Black Series with its twin-turbo 6.0 litre V12. The much praised “active body control” suspension known from the C 215 was standard on the larger engine cars. The R 230 received a mild facelift in 2006 and a more pronounced one in 2008, where the front section was completely re-styled in accordance with the marque’s new design philosophy. When the R 230 was due for replacement in 2011, a total of 169,434 units had been built over the course of a full decade.
