In 1995, BMW presented a new sporting two seater roadster. Designed by Joji Nagashima, technically based on E36 and internally named E36/7, this was the first new BMW to be built exclusively in the US. Within just two years, a new factory had been erected at Greer, South Carolina, which had commenced production of the E36 in 1994. Apart from the powertrain, which still came from Germany, all other components for the Z3 were sourced from North American suppliers. The roadster was very popular right from day one – aided by clever product placement in the 1995 James Bond film GoldenEye.
In 1999, a coupé version (E36/8) was added. This proved somewhat controversial, as it was more of a shooting brake than an actual coupé, and it ended up nicknamed “breadbox” by some critics. The engine palette ranged from a 1.8 litre four-cylinder with 85 kW (116 hp) to the mighty 3.2 litre six-cylinder in the Z3 M, which boasted 239 kW (325 hp).
For the 2000 model year, the Z3 was facelifted, the new look best noticeable at the rear with the L-shaped taillights. The facelift also brought better insulation for the convertible top, which now had three layers, not just one, and higher quality materials were used for the plastic rear window.
Over 7 years, a total of 279,273 roadsters and 17,815 coupés were built.

Sir William Lyons’ iconic XJ had been on the market for nearly three decades by the time Jaguar finally unveiled the successor model, named XJ40. Compared to its predecessor, the new Jaguar featured a more angular styling. It also brought an improved build quality, and the manufacturing process had been optimized for greater efficiency. The XJ40 remained in production until 1994, when it was replaced by the X300 – which re-introduced the more curvaceous looks of the original XJ while being mechanically similar to the XJ40. In 1997, in a significant break with company tradition, both the inline-6 cylinder as well as the V12 engine were phased out, and a new V8 introduced to replace them. The facelifted car was appropriately named X308. The V8 engine came in two sizes, with 3.2 or 4.0 litres of capacity, the latter also available in combination with a supercharger. All cars had an automatic 5-speed transmission. As was customary, Jaguar also offered Daimler and Vanden Plas variants of their luxury sedan.
Total production figures for these Jaguars amount to just over 200,000 units of the XJ40, 92,000 of the X300 and 126,000 for the X308, including the respective submodels.

Even a highly successful car model has to be replaced at some point, so the Mercedes W 123 – a volume model with over 2.7 million units – was followed in 1984 by the W 124. For the next decade and beyond, this Mercedes set the standard in the upper middle class. The design came from Bruno Sacco, technology and build quality were outstanding – fans today speak of the W 124 as “the last true Mercedes”. Despite its somewhat angular lines and distinctive radiator grille, typical of Mercedes in this era, the W 124 had a very low cW value of 0.28 (with narrow tyres).
A wide range of engines was available, petrol with 4, 6 or 8 cylinders and diesel with 4, 5 or 6 cylinders. In addition to the saloon, which was by far the most frequently built model, there were also estate cars (from 1985), coupés (1987) and cabriolets (1991), as well as rare long-wheelbase variants. The W 124 received two model updates, in 1989 and then again in 1993, when the name “E-Class” was introduced.
Production figures for the W 124 almost reached the level of its predecessor, with a total of 2,562,143 units built.

In 1974, Volkswagen presented the Golf – a great improvement on its predecessor, the Beetle, with its air-cooled rear-mounted engine. Right from the start, the Golf was a front-wheel drive car, with water-cooled, transversely mounted engines – and a huge success. After nine years, the second generation was introduced in 1983. The characteristic shape and basic concept remained untouched, but the new series was somewhat more rounded and considerably larger: 5.5 cm wider and a full 28 cm longer. When the 3rd generation was introduced in 1991, it had again become larger and significantly heavier. The “Variant” station wagon version was available from 1994. A new convertible was also launched, so that the Golf I Cabrio could finally be retired after 13 years.
For the Golf III, the engine range started at 1.4 liters and extended to the mighty 2.9 liter VR6, which produced 142 kW (193 hp). Many Golf IIIs were sold with the new turbodiesel direct injection (TDI) engine, which was offered from 1993 and revised in 1996. Unfortunately, the “3 Series Golf” could not quite match its predecessor in terms of rust prevention and build quality.

The original pony car – a legend takes its course
The Mustang was a trendsetter – the “pony cars” were not named after it for nothing. Typical features of the genre are the elongated hood, a comparatively short rear end, enough space for 4 people – but above all, engines with more power than the suspension and braking system could handle… Even in the Mustang of the first series, this could be up to 400 hp from a displacement of almost 7 liters.
The Ford Mustang Eleanor is one of the most famous cars in movie history: The Eleanor.
The Mustang Fastback conversion from the movie “Gone in 60 seconds” from the year 2000.
The Eleanor Mustangs shown in the movie were not real Shelby GT500s. In reality, they were a customized Mustang Fastback based on the GT500 and visually enhanced.
When master thief Randall “Memphis” (Nicolas Cage) caresses the rear of his Eleanor in the movie, fans of American muscle cars are thrilled.
“It’s going to be a drive, Eleanor. We’ll just glide along,” whispers Cage to the car.

Similar to other American car manufacturers in the post-war years, the Chrysler Group entered the automotive market under the brand name Plymouth with slightly modified models from 1942. In 1951, the Plymouth Deluxe was replaced by three new vehicles. The Cranbrook was the most luxurious model in the range, above the Concord and Cambridge models. The technology was almost the same as the previous model, only a new front end and a new dashboard was changed. The Plymouth was powered by a 3.6 liter (217.8 cui) flathead in-line six-cylinder and a 3-speed manual transmission, an overdrive was added in 1952. The body with the long wheelbase offered plenty of space. A requirement was also that the driver and passengers should sit upright, even if they wear hats. The Cranbrook could as a sedan with four doors, coupe with two doors, convertible and as Cranbrook Belvedere called hardtop, a coupé without B-pillar. From 1953, the Cranbrook was also available as a station wagon. The better equipped Savoy changed from the discontinued Plymouth Concord to the Cranbrook series and bore the name Cranbrook Savoy. 1954 already marked the end of the series, the Cranbrook was replaced by the Belvedere.

In 1991, Mercedes-Benz presented its all-new S Class of the W 140 series, replacing the W 126 after a successful 12-year production run. The coupe variant followed one year later. Befitting its status as pinnacle of the Mercedes-Benz lineup, the luxury car was offered with the most powerful engines, either a 5.0 litre V8 delivering 235 kW (320 hp), or with a 6.0 litre V12, rated at 290 kW (394 hp).
Even though these cars were produced for only 7 years, they came with three different name tags: While early cars were still called 500 SEC or 600 SEC, then nomenclature was changed in accordance with the new company-wide naming scheme, and as of 1993, they became S 500 and S 600. In 1996, this was changed once more to become the CL class.
A new 4.2 litre V8 complemented the engine palette as of 1994.
Cars after the 1996 facelift had bumper-integrated parking sensors as standard, as well as Xenon lights or side airbags.
A total of 26,022 of these highly exclusive cars were built – a small number compared to over 400,000 W 140 sedans.

The successor to the very popular E30 was presented in 1990 as the third generation of BMW’s 3 series. Internally called E36, the new sedan was considerably larger (and pricier) than its predecessor. It introduced completely new styling cues, such as the glass covers over the traditional double headlights, the forward-slanting kidney grille or the higher rear section. There were a variety of available body styles: The 2-door sedan had become an elegant coupé which shared very few parts with the 4-door variant. A shorter hatchback called Compact was added in 1994. In 1995, the Touring station wagon followed. A factory convertible as well as the (rare) Baur convertible, offered in the E36 series for the last time, and the Z3 roadster (E36/7), based on the E36 Compact platform, made the lineup complete.
The choice of engines was huge, with no petrol engine producing less than 73 kW (100 hp). Top of the range was the M3, which in 1992 offered 210 kW (286 hp) from a 3.0 litre engine, later being replaced by a 3.2 litre, 236 kW (321 hp) powerplant in 1997. 4- and 6-cylinder diesel engines were also available. The E36 was built totalling 2.5 million units at the BMW plants in Munich, Regensburg, Dingolfing as well as at the newly built Spartanburg factory in the US.
