BMW’s 2nd generation of the 3 series, the E30, replaced its popular predecessor in 1982. With its straight lines, Claus Luthe – who had penned the timeless NSU Ro 80 – created a car that perfectly catered to the taste of its era. The handsome and well-built cars with their wonderfully smooth engines were originally available as 2- and 4-door sedans. As early as 1983, the Baur company at Stuttgart produced a convertible which was distributed through BMW’s official retailers – as had been the case with the predecessor E21. With its fixed window frames and the roll bar, it featured typical 1980s styling cues. The official name was “TC2”, which meant it was the second edition of Baur’s “top cabrio”. Demand was satisfactory – until two years later, BMW presented their own convertible, the first in 15 years. In its completely open state, devoid of the aforementioned bars and beams, it was considered more elegant than the Baur version and became an immediate sales success. Baur – who ironically had designed the factory E30 convertible – continued to offer the TC2 until 1991, albeit with limited success. In the end, 10,865 Baur TC2 had been assembled, making up less than 10 % of the 140,000 factory convertibles. It is precisely this infrequence which nowadays makes a well-kept Baur convertible a most popular alternative.

BMW Z1

sold without english text

For an even more open drive, you’d need a motor-bike!

The BMW Z1, presented at the Frankfurt car fair In 1987 and produced from 1989 to 1991 in a limited small series of only 8,000 units, is a first-rate eye-catcher, which is mainly due to its exciting body with retractable doors. They make getting into the car a bit of a challenge for less mobile citizens, however, they allow for a convertible feeling of a lifetime, for they may even stay down while driving!

The Z1 was a technology demonstrator with distinctive features such as the front mid-engine, the completely, in one piece, galvanized chassis, the body parts made of thermoplastic material or fibreglass and the completely smooth underbody.

The extremely stiff chassis combined with the 170 hp six-cylinder make the Z1 a driving machine that turns each serpentine route into a feast for the senses.

Jaguar XJ 12 Peters Cabrio

The consignor calls it “the finest convertible Jaguar never built” – and we must say, he’s got a point. The XJ is already a very elegant sight in its sedan or coupé shape. Several companies offered custom-made open-top conversions, among the better known ones are Lynx Cars and Avon in England. Arguably the best conversions, however, with the most felicitous styling and technically sound constructions came from German coach builder Peters at Delbrueck near Paderborn. No more than 11 Jaguar XJ coupés of these conversions were made, this is one of them.
The conversion was conducted in 1991. The Jaguar also received a complete engine revision and new coat of paint in the same year, invoices are available and amount to DM 35,000.
Since then, the Jaguar was driven only occasionally, the total mileage since 1991 is reportedly no higher than 13,000 km. The mighty V12 engine runs smooth and leaks oil a bit. Automatic gearbox and air conditioning are among the amenities.
The beautiful XJ in the classic colour scheme white / black has been in the ownership of the same family for over 15 years. It has an acceptable degree of patina and traces of use. A 2010 Classic Data appraisal estimates the market value of this XJ convertible at € 29,500 (condition: 3). It comes with valid technical approval until 11/2017 and historic plates.

The XJ may be regarded as Sir William Lyons’ masterpiece. It was the last car the co-founder of the Jaguar company designed, and what he had created in 1968 turned out to be perennial: The luxury sedan was built over 24 years with only minor modifications regarding the bodywork.
The XJ effectively replaced not only the S series, but the 420 and Mk II along with it, becoming the sole Jaguar saloon and one of the best known British motorcars. At first, only the XJ6 was available, but in 1972, a 12-cylinder version was added, the XJ12, at that time the world’s only mass-produced 12-cylinder sedan.
The first major facelift for the 1974 model year brought raised front bumpers and, consequently, a flatter radiator grille which made the XJ appear even more slender and elegant.
In 1979 the XJ was facelifted once more, incorporating a mild redesign by Pininfarina while largely retaining Sir Lyons’ original lines. Over the whole production span, around 318,000 XJ6 and XJ12 were produced.
One of the pecularities of the XJ is that it is equipped with two separate fuel tanks positioned on each side of the boot, each with its own chrome filler cap and a changeover switch on the dash.

The British automobile brand was founded in Blackpool by Trevor Wilkinson in an old wheelwright’s workshop as Trevcar Motors. The first TVR chassis was built in 1949 using components from the Morris Eight. Trevor Wilkinson’s concept was a combination of a lightweight body on a tubular chassis with a front engine and rear-wheel drive. Due to recurring financial difficulties, the concept of a genuine British, two-seater, open sports car was adopted even after changes of ownership from Wilkinson, Lilley, Wheeler to Smolensky.
Production of the Chimaera began in 1991. With its direct lineage from the Griffith, the Chimaera had proved to be the most prolific of all TVR models. The name is derived from the Chimaera, a fire-breathing monster of Greek mythology, with the head of a lion, the body of a goat and the tail of a snake. Production began in 1991 and lasted until 2003 with five main versions of the model, namely the Chimaera 400, 400HC, 430, 450 and 500. In total, around 6,000 Chimaeras were built. Famously, Ned, Peter Wheeler’s beloved German Pointer, is often credited with helping to design the Chimaera. As Peter Wheeler was quoted at the time: “Yes, he was running around biting the polystyrene model of the Chimaera we had on the table, as usual.”

Well maintained Cadillac Eldorado Convertible in original condition

For many, the years from 1960 to 1969 represent the pinnacle of Cadillac design.
The design excesses of the late 1950s gave way to clean lines and a more thoughtful, conservative design. The success was resounding and with record sales achieved, there was no doubt as to which luxury car would be America’s favourite.
Comfort and luxury along with sophisticated technology were at the forefront. The interior, with its bench seats and abundance of space and freedom, evokes an almost genuine living room flair. In addition to a standard stereo radio system with automatic aerial, there is fully automatic air conditioning, cruise control, hydraulic power steering, electric seat adjustment, heated seats, electric windows and automatic level control on the rear axle. The Cadillacs of the late 1960s are increasingly delighting collectors despite the thirsty V8 engine and the sometimes somewhat complex engineering. The 1965 Eldorado was still only offered as a convertible. Internally, it was a sub-series of the Fleetwood, so that it was occasionally referred to as the “Fleetwood Eldorado Convertible”. On German roads, luxurious Cadillacs were always exotic.

The Cayman is a Porsche mid-engine sports coupe from the Zuffenhaus-based sports car manufacturer. The Cayman S premiered at the International Motor Show (IAA) 2005 in Frankfurt. The sporty two-seater was launched in Germany in November 2005. The technology is based on the Porsche Boxter. The Cayman engine was upgraded with parts from the 911 unit. The cylinder head and the “VarioCamPlus” camshaft control system were taken over. The crankshaft and pistons were completely redesigned by the engine engineers. All chassis components (springs, dampers, stabilizers) were designed to be sportier than on a Boxter. But the closed body also only slightly impairs handling on different road surfaces compared with the open sister model. In July 2006, the entry-level Cayman model with the 2.7-liter 180 KW (245 hp) engine completed the model lineup. A distinguishing feature of the Cayman S are the brake calipers painted red ex works. On behalf of Porsche, Valmet Automotive in Uusikaupunki, Finland, and Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany, produced the Cayman sports cars.

Bentley Continental GT 6.0 W12

Only the best of all worlds

A twelve-cylinder by VW, four-wheel drive technology by Audi, hand-crafted into a luxury class sports coupe at the traditional main factory in Crewe – this is the Continental GT, the first model of the Bentley brand which was created under the auspices of the Volkswagen Group. At times, the demand was so high that the production ran at full capacity, and the well-heeled buyers had no choice but to wait,

When the wait was over, they were able to enjoy a very agile and, notwithstanding the hefty weight of over 2.3 tonnes, sporty luxury coupe which left nothing to be desired, owing to the rich standard equipment and 635 hp of power for the open road.

From the Series II, after a careful facelift in 2011, the Continental GT was available with a V8 engine.
