While other car manufacturers had quickly followed the pioneers Citroen and Opel, who started using unitary construction designs as early as the mid-thirties, Mercedes was a late adopter: Their first unibody car, the 180 of the W120 series, appeared in 1953. It was followed one year later by the larger 220 (W180), which was subsequently nicknamed “the large Ponton”.
While nearly 550,000 Ponton sedans were built between 1953 and 1962, subdivided into different series and equipped with various engines, convertibles and coupés have always been highly exclusive rarities: The price of such a vehicle amounted to 170 % of the comparable sedan, due to the high amount of handwork that went into assembling them. With only 2,081 units, the coupé is the rarest shape, 1,251 were built as W180 and 830 as the successor, the W128. As for the convertible, 2.178 units were manufactured as W 180 and 1,112 units as W128.
Most of these upmarket cars were sold to solvent customers in North America, where Mercedes-Benz at that time partnered Studebaker in a sales group.

Fiat 124 Spider

This charismatic convertible was originally delivered to the US in 1980 and imported to Germany in 2015.

It has the 2.0 litre 4-cylinder engine fitted, providing 74 kW (100 hp), which gives a healthy impression even after 35 years.

The car is reportedly in an original condition, has been re-painted some years back and shows age-related signs of rust, paint peels and minor blemishes.

The interior, clad in beige leatherette, is complete apart from the missing rear window in the foldable roof, which is mechanically intact, but with damaged fabric. The driver’s seat and the dashboard also display some blemishes.

The engine starts and runs, the car is conditionally drivable. With regards to the amount of work required, the car is being offered as a salvage car / restoration project.

At a time when Fiat and Alfa Romeo were competitors, two distinctive convertibles made their debut almost simultaneously: Both were called Spider, both designed by Pininfarina, both with an above-average construction period, both nowadays popular classics. We’re talking about the Fiat 124 Sport Spider and the Alfa Romeo Spider.

The Fiat model was DM 2,000 – that is to say, significantly – cheaper to acquire than the Alfa. It didn’t need to hide, being technically up-to-date, lightweight and agile, with precise handling, a sports car not just by name… in a nutshell, a car one could have a lot of fun with.

The 124 Sport Spider was popular in Europe, but even more so in the US, where it was continuously available until 1983, with engine capacity rising from an original 1400 cc to 2000 cc later on. Pininfarina continued production in their own right after Fiat had withdrawn the Spider from their portfolio, until 1985 – by which time it had become a rather exotic sight. The eternal competitor lasted almost another 10 years. Alfa Romeo had long become part of the Fiat group by then.

Video on Youtube: https://youtu.be/WzYldQ58VI4

The Porsche 914 – or VW-Porsche 914, since it was a cooperation between the two companies – was launched in 1969 as an entry-level model for Porsche, replacing the 912. It was also considered a potential successor to the Karmann Ghia as an upmarket sports model from the Volkswagen point of view.
Technically, the very lightweight car – curb weight lower than 1 ton – was very much up to date and offered extraordinarily good road handling owing to its mid-engine layout. It was available as a VW version with a 4 cylinder engine, called 914/4, or as 914/6, which accordingly had a 6 cylinder engine installed and was sold with a Porsche badge. The 914 has often been described as unsuccessful, but this is really only true for the German market. In the US, where all models were sold as Porsches, at least the 914/4 did remarkably well for a number of years. A production span of 7 years and a total output of 115,646 vehicles built is not a figure to be scoffed at for a 1970s sports car. The 914/6 suffered from its hefty price tag, it was only slightly cheaper than the base model of the 911 and was phased out as early as 1972 after only 3,332 examples.
The mid-engine layout was only resurrected by Porsche in 1996 for the Boxster.

– Volkswagen Corrado, 3-door in blackberry red-metallic with 5-speed manual gearbox
– from 1994, the penultimate year of Corrado production
– delivered and always registered in Germany
– 4-cylinder petrol engine with 85 kW (115 hp)
– unwarranted mileage of 159,100 km
– black fabric interior
– sunroof
– original Gamma Radio on board
– recently serviced
– brake discs, V-belt and spark plugs renewed
– new summer tyres on 15″ alloys
– service booklet and owner´s manual available

The Volkswagen Corrado presented in 1988 was intended to be a cheaper successor to the VW Scirocco II. However, even during the development phase it was established that the “Scirocco III” could not be offered at a lower price and so the Corrado became an independent sports coupe and technology carrier. Originally the vehicle was called “Taifun”. As this carried negative connotations, the name was changed to Corrado, which was derived from the Spanish word for “to run”. The “runner” was above all robust, suitable for everyday use and had a good supply of spare parts. A special feature of the car was the rear wing, which extended automatically at speeds above 120 km/h. An increase in power output from the unchanged displacement was made possible by the G-loader in the G60. Extraordinary for that time was the equipment of the Corrado with power steering, ABS and fog lights as standard. In 1991, models with 16V and VR6 engines were offered, and one year later a facelift brought a re-designed interior. In 1995 the last VW Corrado left the production factory. The model remains in memory as a combination of sportiness and usability.

Not open for everyone, but if open, then for four

Mercedes-Benz convertible lovers had to wait for it for a full two decades: A convertible, which offered no jump seats, but comfortable seats in the rear. There had been no such car since the end of production of the W108 series. In 1992 it was time again! The convertible based on the E-Class (W124) coupé, presented in 1987 – at a time when the corresponding sedan had been out for sale for eight years straight. Early customers weren’t to be deterred by the high purchase price of 100,000 marks, and what they got, was a technically sophisticated vehicle with the proven 3 litre four-valve engine.
In subsequent years, the engine range was extended downwards, yet even the basic version with four-cylinder engine still set you back some 80,000 DM. From October 1996 to July 1997 there was the special “Final Edition” with an elegant, black-brown burl wood.
Since many A124 endet up as tuning victims, un-tinkered original models are now fast advancing to valuable classics.

Peugeot 202 Berline Luxe

This is a rare pre-war beauty: A Peugeot 202, built in 1939, which makes it an early model.According to the chassis number, it would be one of the first 5,000 of its kind. What is most amazing about this example is that it comes with complete history and is according to its previous owner in an unrestored original condition with contemporary adaptions regarding indicators and rear lights.
The car was reportedly driven by a lady from the Paris surroundings for 20 years, then passed on to her nephew who only got it out of its garage on a day registration once a year. The previous owner bought it in France in 1996, obtained historic plates and maintained it appropriately, carefully preserving the valuable interior with its original upholstery and art-deco seat covers.
Rear window shades with “remote control”, sun visors and roof rack (currently detached) are among the features of this vintage car.
The over 75 year old Peugeot bears scratches, dents and traces of use which the previous owner deliberately left untouched, as they add to the charming patina of this historic vehicle. By the way, people unfamiliar with this car wouldn’t even be able to start the engine, since the 202 is devoid of an ignition lock.
There are only about 200 of these cars left, so it will be next to impossible to find another in a similar condition to this one!

Streamlining became very much in vogue in the mid-1930s. The powerful and prestigious express locomotives of the era were streamlined, and of course car manufacturers followed suit. Peugeot can even be seen as a pioneer, having a large streamlined family sedan – the 402 – in their lineup as early as 1935. It featured a sloping front grille behind which the headlights and the battery were positioned, flowing lines devoid of running-boards and covered rear wheel arches. These styling cues were carried over into the slightly smaller 302, released in 1936, as well as the even more compact 202, available as of 1938 and quickly becoming the most successful of the three models.
While optically more avant-garde than Citroën’s Traction Avant, the Peugeot was technically on the conservative side, sticking to a separate chassis configuration rather than the monocoque structure of its main rival. The engine, a 1133 cc water-cooled four-cylinder, was up-to-date, giving 22 kW (30 hp) of power, sufficient for a top speed of 100 km/h. Post-war models had hydraulic brakes and a redesigned dashboard.
Apart from a disruption during WWII, the 202 was built until 1949, reaching a total of 104,126 units, around 200 are said to have survived.

The 4th iteration of BMW’s volume-selling 3 series, internally named E 46, was presented in 1998. As was customary, the sedan came first, followed by other body styles with a short delay. Coupe, convertible and station wagon all came in 1999, whereas the Compact (hatchback) was only introduced in 2001. The E 46 of course offered upgraded versions of the popular 4- and 6-cylinder petrol engines. It was also the first BMW to feature a direct-injection Diesel engine. Entry-level performance was 77 kW (105 hp), while the top of the range was marked by the M3, which boasted 252 kW (343 hp) from 3.3 litres of capacity. Passenger safety was improved by a more rigid body shell as well as the introduction of 6 airbags, traction control and – as of 2001 – vehicle dynamics control as standard. In Motorsports, the E 46 was also successful, winning several Championships between 2003 and 2008. The E 46 became the best-selling 3 series so far, with 3,266,885 units sold, which equates to a 19 % increase in volume over the E 36 predecessor.

Ford OSI 20M TS

The most beautiful German Ford in classy Italian design
-“OSI” named after the Italian producer “Officina Stampaggi Industriali” in Torino
– An racy, refined italian body paired with the solid mass production technique of the former top serie Ford P7a
– Only 1,279 vehicles built between 1967 and 1968. About 200 of them are still running on German roads
– 2.0L V6 and 90 HP with a great sound
– 4 speed manual transmission
– 2019: Body completely restored and repainted in classy red colour (pictures of the restoration available)
– Neat beige leather interior, wooden refurbishment with slight patina + wooden Nardi steering wheel
– 12.500 Km as stated
– Fuel gauge + tachometer without function, indicator occasionally not working properly
– Technical control (MoT) until 07/2022
– German registration + Historic vehicle admission

The story about the creation of the OSI Ford is curious. In early 1965, OSI was commissioned by Ford to create a sleek styling study based on the Taunus P5. The design came from Sergio Sartorelli, who once designed the Karmann Ghia Type 34 (“the big Karmann”). In March 1966, Ford showed the styling result at the Geneva Salon and was completely surprised by the public’s approval. In fact, OSI was to build the car like this. And now the body shop was surprised by the yes to series production. Despite hastily built manual production, the quality was surprisingly good.
Ford Europe sent the Starrachs chassis and initially the engine two-liter V6 of the Taunus to Italy, OSI re-dressed the base: The steering wheel and ashtray came from Maserati, the horn button from the Fiat 500, and the taillights from the Ferrari 275. The engine, however, produced just 90 hp, ensured a rather mediocre top speed of 165 km/h, and gave the car 14.5 seconds to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h. From the end of 1967, the more powerful 2.3-liter V6 was available as an option, but with only 108 hp. Initially six, later 15 cars per day were produced thanks to the help of 800 workers. Ford provided the distribution network, and the OSIs received the same attention in the workshops as the pure Fords.

For some people it is one of the most desirable BMW coupés of all times: the “New Six” CS, internally called E9, which was presented in 1968. It was based on the New Class coupé (2000 C / 2000 CS), but featured a longer wheelbase and longer engine bay, as well as a front resembling the then-new E3 luxury sedans. While all of this contributed to giving the coupé a more elegant appearance, its choice of engines also helped to increase the appeal of the E9 as BMW’s top-of-the-range coupé: The M30 straight-6 cylinder engine was offered with originally 2.8, later 3.0 litres of capacity and a power output of up to 151 kW (206 hp), just like in the E3 sedans. The elegant body was built by Karmann at Osnabrück.
Unforgotten are the successes of the E9 on the racing track, where the lightweight version 3.0 CSL secured many victories. The cars had as of 1973 been given a bizarre-looking aerodynamic package which earned it the nickname “Batmobile”.
The E9 was discontinued in 1975 when it was replaced by the E24 “6-series”, but went on to dominate racing until 1979. With 30,546 units built, it had outsold its predecessors by far.

The successor to the very popular E30 was presented in 1990 as the third generation of BMW’s 3 series. Internally called E36, the new sedan was considerably larger (and pricier) than its predecessor. It introduced completely new styling cues, such as the glass covers over the traditional double headlights, the forward-slanting kidney grille or the higher rear section. There were a variety of available body styles: The 2-door sedan had become an elegant coupé which shared very few parts with the 4-door variant. A shorter hatchback called Compact was added in 1994. In 1995, the Touring station wagon followed. A factory convertible as well as the (rare) Baur convertible, offered in the E36 series for the last time, and the Z3 roadster (E36/7), based on the E36 Compact platform, made the lineup complete.
The choice of engines was huge, with no petrol engine producing less than 73 kW (100 hp). Top of the range was the M3, which in 1992 offered 210 kW (286 hp) from a 3.0 litre engine, later being replaced by a 3.2 litre, 236 kW (321 hp) powerplant in 1997. 4- and 6-cylinder diesel engines were also available. The E36 was built totalling 2.5 million units at the BMW plants in Munich, Regensburg, Dingolfing as well as at the newly built Spartanburg factory in the US.
