NSU Sport-Prinz

This Sport-Prinz is a real rarity … who awakens it with a kiss?

Our prince may not have slept for a 100 years in the fairytale castle, but it did spend the last 20 years in a garage. Now it is looking forward to being brought back to life. It packs as much charisma as will fit in three and a half meters. A car with an infinite “isn’t it cute” factor.

But no pain, no price, this applies not only in fairy tales. The buyer of this cutie gets some un-tinkered, original substance. The interior is complete and in accordance with the age of the vehicle. The chrome parts are stained, the bright door panels and the sky are not white as a flower, but well within the expected scope. The Driver’s seat and the rear jump seat right show cracks or damage. The original Blaupunkt radio is included.
The external condition is acceptable, but not perfect. The coupe has been repainted over the course of its long life, and rust is found in some places. Also, the front left fender displays a scratch and a wheel cover is damaged. The two-cylinder engine in the rear is also still in the midst of a deep slumber.

But fairy tales always have a happy ending. Therefore: Cheer up!

Italian elegance for the little prince of Neckarsulm

The body of the Prinz I as presented in 1957 had been seen by some critics as too homespun. Only one year later, NSU came forward with a distinctly stylish coupe on the basis of the small car, “a very pretty two-seater with a bright pavilion and gently sloping roof line” (FAZ). The design came from Franco Scaglione from the Italian coachbuilder Bertone, who also took over the production of the first bodies. Since the quality was poor, NSU re-commissioned the construction to the Drauz special workshop in Heilbronn, which made the Sport-Prinz not only better, but also over 20 % cheaper!

Underneath the snazzy hull, there was the proven technology of the current Prinz: First, the two-cylinder engine of the Prince II, later the one with slightly larger displacement from the Prince 4. The testers praised the good road handling and manageability of the coupe – and despite a top speed of 120 km/h, the Sport-Prinz was quite successful at ralliies, especially on mountain runs.

NSU Prinz 3

A garage find – restorers wanted!

Here we have a rare Prinz 3 on sale for you. A cute, chubby, pretty little car that will definitely be an eye-catcher, once it’s restored.

The interior has significant traces of use and aging, but the seats are original and remarkably well preserved. The gearbox is missing, the 2-cylinder rear engine has not been tested. Since the NSU had been parked over the past 20 years, unmoved, in a dry garage, there is a lot to be done for sure. On the other hand, here’s a lot of good original substance to work with.

This little sweetie deserves to be done up really nicely. Who’s got the heart to do it?

Drive the “Prinz” and you are king – 50s charm at its best

Just 3.15 meters long, barely more than 500 kg net weight, 20 hp from 600 cc, two cylinders, just over 100 km / h top-speed – but room for four people who, according to the contemporary marketing slogan, felt like kings: That was the NSU Prinz, as presented at the IAA 1957 for the first time.

The rounded window in the rear section gave away that NSU had originally planned a three-wheeled vehicle in the manner of a cabin scooter, before they switched over to the more modern four-wheel design. The transmission in the spartan equipped Prinz I was not synchronized. From 1959, the Prinz II featured a synchronized four-speed transmission, pivoting triangular windows in the front doors and reclining seats. Also starting in 1959, the Prinz 30 became available, providing 30 hp owing to the higher compression and a larger carburetor, sufficient for a speed of 118 km/h. The small engines in the rear were loud, but durable and economical. From this series of “little prince” of Neckarsulm, a total of 94,549 vehicles were built.

Good general condition with minor traces of use

In 1974, Volkswagen presented the Golf – a great improvement on its predecessor, the Beetle, with its air-cooled rear-mounted engine. Right from the start, the Golf was a front-wheel drive car, with water-cooled, transversely mounted engines – and a huge success. After nine years, the second generation was introduced in 1983. The characteristic shape and basic concept remained untouched, but the new series was somewhat more rounded and considerably larger: 5.5 cm wider and a full 28 cm longer! The engine selection was wide: it started at 40 kW (55 hp) as the base model and ranged up to 118 kW (160 hp) in the GTI G60 at the end of the production range. A total of about 6.4 million Golf IIs were built and led the registration statistics in many countries. Even today, the “two-person Golf” is still a familiar sight on German roads, thanks to effective rust prevention and superior build quality.
A small series (100 units) of the Golf II was built as the “citySTROMer” electric car. Interestingly, there was no factory convertible, so the Golf I Cabrio (1980 – 1993) completely outlasted the Golf II.

The successor to the very popular E30 was presented in 1990 as the third generation of BMW’s 3 series. Internally called E36, the new sedan was considerably larger (and pricier) than its predecessor. It introduced completely new styling cues, such as the glass covers over the traditional double headlights, the forward-slanting kidney grille or the higher rear section. There were a variety of available body styles: The 2-door sedan had become an elegant coupĂ© which shared very few parts with the 4-door variant. A shorter hatchback called Compact was added in 1994. In 1995, the Touring station wagon followed. A factory convertible as well as the (rare) Baur convertible, offered in the E36 series for the last time, and the Z3 roadster (E36/7), based on the E36 Compact platform, made the lineup complete.
The choice of engines was huge, with no petrol engine producing less than 73 kW (100 hp). Top of the range was the M3, which in 1992 offered 210 kW (286 hp) from a 3.0 litre engine, later being replaced by a 3.2 litre, 236 kW (321 hp) powerplant in 1997. 4- and 6-cylinder diesel engines were also available. The E36 was built totalling 2.5 million units at the BMW plants in Munich, Regensburg, Dingolfing as well as at the newly built Spartanburg factory in the US.

Opel KapitÀn

Sometimes, a collector of classic cars just absolutely has to have a certain model. And then he realizes, time and space are limited… so some other vehicle needs to go, never mind the thousands spent on it over the years. Here we have such a case: Not a snow-white ’51 KapitĂ€n, as in singer-songwriter Reinhard Mey’s lyrics, but a wine red one. The consignor held it since 2011 and invested over € 15,000 in it. And that was, nota bene, after the car had been taxed at € 28,500 by a Classic Data expert.
This Opel KapitĂ€n comes with a complete history since 1993, comprising a copious amount of repair receipts as well as the original owner’s manual. The car is said to be in technically excellent condition, and optically it has just the right degree of patina. The body is in a healthy, yet not unwelded state. The paintwork dates back to 1995 with slight traces of use and small-scale touch ups. All chrome parts are complete, either original or replaced. The interior was refurbished in the 1990s with great emphasis on originality. Over the past years, the straight-six cylinder engine with 2,456 cc of displacement has been overhauled and clutch, fuel tank, dampers, wheel bearings, radiator, alternator and the front axle all either replaced or refurbished. A 12 V electric system has been installed, with halogen headlights, electric windscreen wiper and fuel pump.
A well-maintained historic Opel from the “economic miracle” era.

In 1931, General Motors had assumed full control of the Opel company. It comes as no surprise that henceforth, many Opel models appeared with distinctly American styling cues. This is particularly true for Opel’s last pre-war development, the KapitĂ€n. With its unitary body and independent front wheel suspension, it was a truly modern motorcar. By the time civilian car production was halted in 1940, over 25,000 units had been built. In 1948, production was resumed, making it Germany’s first post-war six-cylinder model. Initially only available to the occupying powers, the basically unchanged Opel was sold as of 1949 to private customers. It became the transport of choice for company directors, politicians and head physicians. Of this version of KapitĂ€n, over 30,000 vehicles were built.
The 1951 KapitĂ€n brought a facelift, with this came a modified radiator grille and an abundance of chrome. The engine’s power output rose slightly from 40 kW (55 hp) to 43 kW (57 hp). This model became the most popular full-sized car of early postwar Germany. It remained in production until 1953, by which time over 48,500 cars had been built in the course of only three years, pushing the total number of units made with this particularly body shape past the 100,000 mark.

At the Turin Motor Show in April 1994, Mercedes-Benz presented for the first time in a study with the abbreviation SLK a compact roadster with a long vehicle front, short overhangs at the front and rear and a pronounced wedge shape. The special feature of this 2-seater sports car is the folding steel roof. At the push of a button the complete roof disappears electro-hydraulically within 25 seconds in the trunk. In terms of safety, the SLK impressed with two roll bars behind the seats and the particularly stable A-pillars. This ensures an absolutely high level of rollover protection for the occupants. The engine range included a 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine with 100 kW (136 hp) and a mechanically supercharged 2.3 liter four-cylinder engine with 142 kW (193 hp). The two-liter engine version was equipped with a mechanical supercharger in spring 2000, which then produced 120 kW (163 PS) on the road. Later the engine range was extended with two six-cylinder engines. The first series, R 170, was produced from 1996 – 2004.
The second series, the R 171, was released in spring 2004 and thanks to a newly developed chassis, more powerful engines and a more direct steering, the R 171 offered even more driving pleasure.

Perfect off-road vehicle for cross country trips

In the mid-1970s, Volkswagen received an order from the German armed forces to develop the successor to the DKW Munga. Under the type number 183, the development was mainly taken over by Audi in Ingolstadt. Parts of the floor pan were taken over from the predecessor. The engine, formerly from the South American Passat, came from the Volkswagen construction kit. The five-speed transmission was taken from the Audi 100, with the first stage designed as an unsynchronized off-road gear for plenty of torque at low speed. The identical front and rear axles had, at choice, a limited-slip differential. This technology, modified of course, served as a thought model for the later Audi Quattro series. The fully functional use at temperatures from -30°C to + 44°C was guaranteed by the VW group. A ground clearance of 60cm and a climbing ability of 77% make the Iltis a powerful off-road vehicle. In 1979, VW presented the Iltis in a civilian version with equipment similar to that of a passenger car. In order to increase interest in a civilian off-road vehicle, VW competed in the grueling “Paris – Dakar” rally. The almost standard Iltis with the starting number 137 was the overall winner. Another 3 Iltis finished among the first 10 places. Among them also the service vehicle.
