Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

The Karmann Ghia – The dream car of the 50s

This Karmann Ghia was produced eight years after the start of production of the convertible (1957). Insofar some modifications are already included. Thus it has the larger headlights and “nostrils”, an armrest on the driver’s side, a windscreen washer system and a headlamp flasher.

The car was re-imported from the US and had been restored there a few years ago, unfortunately not very professionally and not in perfect quality (e. g. US-painting with inadequate preparatory work and partly varnished seals). Technically, the vehicle is in good condition and equipped with the 1.6-liter four-cylinder boxer engine. Brakes and clutch function properly. The underbody is rust free and the bumpers are new. The chrome is complete. The on-board voltage was converted from 6V to 12V. Convertible top and interior present themselves pretty neat.

This is a accident/ restoration car that needs repair before registration/ roadworthiness.

The preparatory work for the Type 14 at Karmann in OsnabrĆ¼ck began in early spring of 1953. The Italian design studio Ghia was charged with the draft of a coupĆ© based on the Beetle.

The prototype ā€“ presented at the end of 1953 – wowed the client and was also favourably accepted in Wolfsburg: The serial development of a 2 + 2-seater coupĆ© was decided and the production of the Karmann Ghia was launched in August 1955. On the 38th IAA the Karmann Ghia Cabriolet was presented. The vehicle was produced in Osnabruck from 1st November 1957 and priced at DM 8,250.

Karmann united with this vehicle the solid engineering of the Beetle with the elegant body of Italian design. To reduce the tilty and the oversteer tendency, the Karmann Ghia was fitted from the start with a front roll stabiliser. An enlargement of the front seat area has been achieved by the wider body compared to the Beetle. The running boards were omitted.

A total of 50,000 units were built, many of them went to the United States.

Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL 4.5

A real rarity is this Mercedes 280 SEL 4.5 of the W108 series (Quantity: 8,173).
It was produced with the 4.5-liter eight-cylinder engines especially for the American market only from April 1971 to November 1972 and provides 146 kW (199 hp).

This is a 2014 reimported restoration object in dark blue with blue leatherette interior. The vehicle is richly equipped and has in addition to the mandatory automatic transmission amongst others air conditioning, power windows and a sun roof. Both the body side and technically the vehicle are in need of repair / restoration.

A beautiful vehicle for travelling back in history.

There is a current Classic Data appraisal of ā‚¬ 17.000 (condition 3+) and furthermore investigation reports in accordance with Ā§21 and Ā§23 Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) are available.

The S-Class of the late 60s

Even if the W 108 model series was never officially called “S-class”, it was just that: The top model of the German premium manufacturer, predestined for the rich and famous in all countries. Presidents, business leaders, successful businessmen and nobles should buy it. Since these gentlemen preferred being chauffeured, a long-wheelbase version was offered during the entire construction period.

One could choose between the 6- and 8-cylinder engines, whereupon the biggest, a powerful 8-cylinder engine with 4.5 liter capacity, was produced only for the American market. Apart from that, the big Benz was ā€“ as always – also a technology and innovation leader, it had disc brakes on all wheels and a dual brake circuit. The design was chosen deliberately free of short-lived fads (like the tail fins of the previous model).

NSU Ro 80

Such a fine sight, this Ro 80. This example of the technology pioneer has, according to the previous owner, spent almost two decades “hibernating” in a garage, sheltered, but completely unmoved. Accordingly, more than a little “spring cleaning” will be required, before the 2-disc Wankel engine will purr like on day one. The vehicle is technically in an untinkered original condition – compression is ok, but the exact scope of the work required has not been determined.

The inside gives a well-kept impression. The beige velour blends well with the original paint in blue metallic. The sky is clean, as are the seats, and the interior altogether without major flaws. The original radio is also on board.
The chrome parts are in good, albeit slightly tarnished state. The vehicle is reportedly accident-free, only a slight dent in the driver’s door casts a small shadow on the overall picture.

All in all a car that absolutely deserves to be carefully restored and recommissioned. It will be worth it!

A connoisseur’s sedan – Revolutionary technology in designer costume

When NSU presented the Ro 80 in 1967, the car created quite a stir, what with numerous innovations all packed into one vehicle. Above and beyond all else, there’s the Wankel engine, which unfortunately was rather damage-prone at first, ruining the reputation of the otherwise ingenious engineering feat, even if the problems got completely resolved over time. Other features were, among others, disc brakes on all four wheels, or electro-pneumatically actuated semi-automatic gearshift. Then as now an eye-catcher: the wedge-shaped body, anticipating design tendencies by about two decades.

The enthusiasts’ scene of the Ro 80 owners is particularly active, so it is no problem to use one of these stylish cars as a daily driver. What is, however, rather difficult to describe is this unique ride on the motorway, with the engine noise getting lesser and lesser as the speed increases.

This Mexico beetle is a 1200 L version, 25 kW (34 hp), built in 1978 and originally registered in Germany on 06/10/1978. Unwarranted mileage: 87,605 kilometers. Historic plates, TUV 9/2016.

The vehicle has been professionally restored and is almost entirely rust free. Chrome, wheels and tyres are good. The engine was also revised and runs flawlessly, with many new parts. The paintwork in the original colour “Manila Green” (L63Y) is very good. The interior with black and white upholstery is good, only wear on the side cheek of the driver’s seat and the non-original headrest covers mitigate the impressive condition. The vehicle is very authentic, has 2 keys, the original operating instructions and a contemporary radio.

A very beautiful version of this classic that brings a smile to many people!

Mercedes-Benz 220 B (W187)

  • In

– 1952 Mercedes-Benz 220 B Convertible from the W 187 series
– one of only 997 vehicles of its kind
– used to run in Portugal, exact number of owners unknown
– restored some time ago
– elegant colour combination of beige paint and blue leather interior
– very attractive and well-kept condition inside and out
– inline 6-cylinder engine with 59 kW (80 hp) from 2.2 litres of capacity
– 4-speed manual gearbox
– mechanically sound, recently checked, no pending repairs reported
– Portugese registration documents, technical approval until 11/2019
– a rare and highly special convertible that complements any Mercedes-Benz collection

Immediately after WWII, Mercedes-Benz had only offered 4-cylinder engines in their passenger cars. This changed when at the Frankfurt Motor Show of 1951, the company presented two 6-cylinder models: One was the range-topping 300 (W 186), the other the 220 (W 187). The latter essentially used the chassis and body shell of the pre-war W 153, presented in 1938, just that the previously free-standing headlights were now integrated into the fenders in an attempt at making the car look more modern. In direct comparison to more progressively styled, ponton-bodied cars like the Borgward Hansa, the 220 still looked positively old-fashioned from the start. What was modern and received plenty of praise, however, was the inline 6-cylinder engine with overhead camshaft and oversquare dylinder dimensions. It provided a power output of 59 kW (80 hp), sufficient for a top speed of 140 km/h (or 145 km/h for the convertible). So it doesn’t come as a surprise that, while the W 187 had an unusually short production run, the basic layout of the M 180 engine lived on, with many modifications and power enhancements, until 1989. A total of 18,514 units of the W 187 were built, with the coupe – only available 1954 / 1955 – being by far the rarest model, of which only 85 pieces were manufactured.

Mercedes-Benz 350 SLC

With a production date of 1972, this is an early model Mercedes-Benz 350 SLC, which was first delivered to France. It stands out from the numerous R107 re-imports as a largely original vehicle with comprehensive ownership history, which has remained in the same family of owners for nearly all its life. The car has been largely repainted and is virtually free of rust according to the consignor. The SLC presents itself in a well cared-for condition inside and out. The Mercedes runs on beautiful Fuchs alloys, a set of original steel rims and hubcaps is included. The Becker Grand Prix radio is on board, complete with electric aerial. The 3.5 litre V8 engine produces 147 kW (200 hp) and sends drive to the rear wheels by means of a 3-speed automatic transmission. The previous owner maintained this Mercedes meticulously, renewing and replacing worn parts wherever necessary, so the SL is mechanically sound and runs very smooth. All services and repairs since 2010 are fully documented.
All original booklets, including owner’s manual, service booklet, radio manual, data card, as well as numerous repair receipts are available. A Classic Data brief appraisal from 2012 estimates the market value of this coupe at ā‚¬ 15,500 (condition: 2-). It comes with German registration documents, valid technical approval until 03/2016 and historic plates.
R107 coupĆ©s in this condition are hard to find – this one is bound to win you over!

Based on the R 107, Mercedes created a sports coupĆ© with the series designation C 107, which was first presented in 1971 and marketed as SLC. The SLC’s wheelbase was a full 36 cm longer than that of the SL. The coupe was a 5-seater, slightly heavier than the convertible, but the better drag coefficient made up for that, their top speed was identical. Its distinguishing styling cues were the very large, curved rear window and the slats in the back – born out of necessity in order to fully lower the rear side windows.

There were the M 110 six-cylinder engine, as well as the M 116 and M 117 eight-cylinder engines to choose from. The most powerful version, the 450 SLC 5.0 or, as of 1980, 500 SLC offered 176 kW (240 hp).

The coupĆ© was produced for 10 years – a long time, though considerably shorter than the 18 years of the R 107. During this period 62,888 units were built – much fewer than the convertible variant.

Mercedes-Benz 380 SL

This Mercedes-Benz 380 SL is clearly distinguished as a US model by its headlights and the bumpers, which were a safety requirement at that time: The cars had to withstand a crash of up to 5 mph without damage to their body. This 380 SL was imported into Germany in 2011 and has since gone through three ownerships. The metallic beige paintwork is in good condition, and the car presents itself in well-maintained condition inside and out with only minor blemishes, such as the typical cracks in the dashboard or centre console, caused by intense UV exposure. The Mercedes is, according to the consignor, free of rust and has not been welded. A body-coloured hardtop comes with the car.
Engine-wise, the 3.8 litre V8 is installed, which in combination with the 4-speed automatic powertrain – offered since mid-year 1982 the US market – makes for a very pleasant cruising experience. The original Becker Grand Prix radio is on board, complete with electric aerial.
Engine and gearbox leak oil a little, and the odometre and clock are out of order.
The boot looks dry and clean. The original rims look very well-kept.
The car comes with german registration documents, it has valid technical approval until 07/2017 as well as historic plates. The original owner’s manual, service booklet and several repair receipts are available.

Another highlight from Mercedes-Benz!

The SL series R107, which came on the market in 1971 as the successor to the so-called “Pagoda” (W 113 series), established a new line of design at Mercedes-Benz with its broad H4 headlights and large ribbed tail lights.

The fact that this styling is well received even today, is proven by the number of registered historic vehicles in Germany: The R107 SLs take third place of popularity, only surpassed by the VW beetle and the Mercedes W 123 series (both of which were built in much higher numbers!).

As with the previous model, the US formed the largest market. The vast majority of the vehicles was equipped with high capacity V8 engines.

This vehicle set numerous standards with continuous innovations over time and is now one of the eternal classics.

BMW M6

“Bavaria Express”, that’s what the fans called it, affectionately understating. And in the M version with 188 kW (255 hp), the 6 Series coupĆ© was a real Porsche killer. The presentation in Geneva had already been 13 years in the past, when this snappy Bavarian left the factory and was delivered to its first destination, the United States. Under the hood, there was the M88 engine, a 3.5 litre straight six-cylinder also installed in the M1.

On the inside, this M6 wins you over with an elegant colour combination of beige leather, with dashboard and door trim parts contrasting in black. All of the interior gives a neat and very valuable impression. Board computer, air conditioning and electrically adjustable seats with memory function are on the features’ list. The BMW’s exterior, too, makes a very well maintained impression: Paint and chrome are good, the alloys free from kerb damage.
All in all, the M6 displays only slight, age-related traces of wear and tear. Technical approval is valid till 03/2017. A recent Classic Data brief appraisal over ā‚¬ 48,000.- (condition: 2+) is available.

A coupĆ© for connoisseurs, for which the historic plates aren’t far off. A classic it is already.

A high-revving straight six engine, standard drive, and all packaged in an equally expressive as well as timeless coupƩ shape: Hardly surprising the BMW 6 Series (E24) met with enthusiastic buyers for over 13 years, longer than any other BMW.

Upon its presentation, the design anticipated the styling of the future 7 Series (E23). Inside, there is the driver-related cockpit – a 70s novelty at BMW – with the center console turned slightly towards the driver. Otherwise, the upper-class coupĆ© boasts lush luxury, since the 6 Series was designed for a comfortable ride. And that is not at all contrary to a sporting performance, least of all with the more powerful engines of the 635 CSi.

The 6 Series has the reputation of easy maintenance, and its engines are said to be virtually indestructible. For this reason, this BMW is well placed for a second spring as a classic that is fit for everyday use.

The essence of automotive beauty

No other than Enzo Ferrari called the E-Type the most beautiful car ever made, and even if beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, not too many people would have contradicted him since. The debut of the XK-E, called “E-Type”, in 1961 was nothing short of a sensation. Its unrivalled elegant styling was complemented by plenty of power, and all of that at a relatively moderate price.

Over the years, the successful model was modified in several ways: From spring of 1966 there was a 2 + 2-seater version with an extended wheelbase. In 1967, the headlight covers fell victim to American safety regulations. On the engine side, there were six-cylinder engines with 3.8 and later 4.2 litres, and as of 1971, twelve-cylinder motors to choose from. Production of the compact two-seaters ceased in 1971, the so-called Series III was only offered as a 2+2-seater.

A classic car of superlatives that became an icon of the motoring world.
The New York City Museum of Modern Art recognised the significance of the E-Type’s design in 1996 by adding a blue roadster to its permanent design collection, one of only six automobiles to receive the distinction

Mercedes-Benz 300 TE 4Matic

– 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300 TE 4Matic in grey metallic
– one of only 34,177 units built with 4Matic drive, from an overall 2.6 million W124
– automatic all-wheel-drive for perfect handling on and off road
– elevated chassis, ABS and front airbags for a comfortable and safe driving experience
– climate control, power windows and electric side mirrors
– reportedly accident-free car, service booklet available
– sunroof, power steering, roof railing and fog lamps
– powerful inline-six cylinder engine with 132 kW (179 hp)
– interior with almost no signs of wear
– paint and engine in good condition
– a station wagon as rare as the W124 convertible
– German registration documents and valid technical approval until 02/2020

Even a hugely successful car series needs to be replaced eventually, so the Mercedes W 123, a volume seller with over 2.7 million units, was superseded by the W 124 in 1984. For the next decade and more, this Mercedes defined the standard for mid-size luxury cars. The styling came from Bruno Sacco, and engineering as well as build quality were nothing short of excellent – so much so, that its fans have taken to nicknaming the W 124 “the last true Mercedes”. Despite its somewhat box-shaped lines with the prominent radiator grille, typical for Mercedes cars of its era, the W 124 actually had a very low drag coefficient of 0.28 (with slim tyres).
A wide selection of engines was available: petrol engines with 4, 6 or 8 cylinders and diesel engines with 4, 5 or 6 cylinders. Apart from the sedan, which was by far the most common body style, there were also station wagons (as of 1985), coupĆ©s (1987) and convertibles (1991), as well as rare long-wheelbase variants. The W 124 was facelifted in 1989 and then again in 1993, when the name “E-Class” was introduced.
Production numbers of the W 124 reached almost the level of its predecessor, totalling 2,562,143 vehicles.
