“Route 66 meets the Autobahn” was the marketing slogan of the Chrysler Crossfire, presented in 2003. This sports car was not built in the US, but at Karmann in Osnabrueck and was available as a coupe and roadster. The Crossfire was based on the Mercedes SLK of the R 170 series, but with a fixed steel roof or a fabric roof for the roadster. The name of the model comes from the crease directions crossing along the side line. The basic engine of the smallest sports car marketed as Chrysler was a 3.2-litre naturally aspirated 160 kW (218 hp) engine. In 2004, at the Geneva Motor Show, the stronger version, Crossfire SRT6, with a supercharged engine and an output of 246 kW (335 hp) was presented. The SRT6 was available with a six-speed manual gearbox or with a five-speed automatic gearbox at an extra charge. Two special models, Black Line and Silver Line, appeared at the end of 2014 to increase sales. Black Line was a cheaper version, which was offered only with manual transmission. The Silver Line variant, on the other hand, was equipped with automatic transmissions and carbon fiber fairings. By 2007, a total of 76,045 units of this elegant sports car had been built. An interesting detail: The standard tyres are 18 inches at the front and 19 inches at the rear.

With “Cylinders: V12”, it beat them all, or almost. A winning type therefore – despite being eyed with rather a lot of suspicion at its presentation – hardly surprising, after all, being the heir to an undisputed cult object such as the Jaguar E-Type is certainly no easy game to play.

And yet it has managed, in its very own way. Precisely by being different: Massive, dignified, courageous, athletic only at second glance – a bit quirky even, a car for individualists. And they honored it, kept buying the distinctive upper-class coupé for over two decades. Painted in the original signal red (MB colour code 568) – just like Bobby Ewing in the US television series Dallas had one – it comes with a hard top of the same colour and a black soft top, both in good condition. The unwarranted mileage is 123,247 mls, year of manufacture is 1981.
Paint and chrome are in decent shape regarding their age and show normal traces of use (such as a small bump on the driver’s door), as is the black leather interior. Due to its exclusive stay in sunny Southern California, the vehicle is virtually rust free.

The red paint is matched by the chrome Baroque alloys (in moderate condition), and – not original – chrome wheel arches and trim. Of course, that’s a matter of taste. In addition to the mandatory automatic gearbox, air conditioning is on board, as well as cruise control and power windows.

The German TÜV approval and historic plates are still pending.

The SL series R107, which came on the market in 1971 as the successor to the so-called “Pagoda” (W 113 series), established a new line of design at Mercedes-Benz with its broad H4 headlights and large ribbed tail lights.

The fact that this styling is well received even today, is proven by the number of registered historic vehicles in Germany: The R107 SLs take third place of popularity, only surpassed by the VW beetle and the Mercedes W 123 series (both of which were built in much higher numbers!).

As with the previous model, the US formed the largest market. The vast majority of the vehicles was equipped with high capacity V8 engines.
