Production of the Triumph TR6 began in January 1969 as the successor to the TR5/TR250 series. Some chassis and suspension components from the successful predecessor series were adopted. The design of the new English roadster did not originate from the Italian automobile designer Giovanni Michelotti, but the German bodywork factory Karmann in Osnabrück took over the exterior design of the body. Design elements from its predecessors were also retained. The smooth lines of the bodywork, the modified rear design with the enlarged trunk and the wider wheels make the Roadster look flatter and faster. With a top speed of over 190 km/h, the powerful 2.5-liter 6-cylinder in-line engine with 105 kW/143 hp also made its contribution. During its production period, which ended in July 1976, several modifications were made. This also affected the gearbox, which was replaced by the Triumph Stag unit from around mid-1971. The functional equipment, the comfortable seats and the clearly designed dashboard are popular features of the TR6. It embodies the appeal of a British roadster and is still an extremely popular sports car today. Its successor, the TR7, is a completely new model.

Mercedes-Benz E 320 Coupé

There wasn’t a time in automotive history when ownership of a Mercedes Coupé would not be understood as a clear status symbol – and every single model over time became a sought-after classic. The W 124 coupé may still be in the early stages of this process, however, prices are beginning to climb, so the purchase of this car can be seen as a worthwhile long-term investment – even more so, as the W 124 in general, and the 6-cylinder engines in particular are known to be extremely reliable and capable of covering very high mileages without difficulty.
This E 320 coupé was built in 1994 – which means it is a so-called “Mopf 2”, a model after the 2nd facelift, and it has always been registered in Germany. It has the 3.2 litre 6-cylinder engine installed, which produces 162 kW (220 hp) of power and is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. The feature list of this car includes dual airbags, air conditioning, a steel sunroof, power windows front and rear, heated driver’s seat and headlamp wipers. The original cassette radio is still installed. Apart from cracks in the centre console, the interior is in a good state of preservation. On the outside, a larger scratch and dent on the right-hand side slightly tarnishes the overall good impression. The air flow sensor is presumably out of order.
The E 320 has German registration documents and comes with valid technical approval until 09/2017. All in all, this is an attractively priced future classic.

Even a hugely successful car series needs to be replaced eventually, so the Mercedes W 123, a volume seller with over 2.7 million units, was superseded by the W 124 in 1984. For the next decade and more, this Mercedes defined the standard for mid-size luxury cars. The styling came from Bruno Sacco, and engineering as well as build quality were nothing short of excellent – so much so, that its fans have taken to nicknaming the W 124 “the last true Mercedes”. Despite its somewhat box-shaped lines with the prominent radiator grille, typical for Mercedes cars of its era, the W 124 actually had a very low drag coefficient of 0.28 (with slim tyres).
A wide selection of engines was available: petrol engines with 4, 6 or 8 cylinders and diesel engines with 4, 5 or 6 cylinders. Apart from the sedan, which was by far the most common body style, there were also station wagons (as of 1985), coupés (1987) and convertibles (1991), as well as rare long-wheelbase variants. The W 124 was facelifted in 1989 and then again in 1993, when the name “E-Class” was introduced.
Production numbers of the W 124 reached almost the level of its predecessor, totalling 2,562,143 vehicles.

At the 1963 IAA (International Motor Show) in Frankfurt, the NSU Wankel Spider stole the media show from the other debutants, the Porsche 911 (901) and MB 600. The reason was the invention, the rotary piston engine of Felix Wankel, which was presented in the world’s first production car. The rotary piston engine offered considerable advantages over the conventional reciprocating piston engine.
With only one rotating disk, the rotary engine can be produced much more economically and weighs a third less while running exceptionally smoothly. This revolutionary engine powered the NSU Sport Prinz Spider designed by Bertone, which was exhibited as a study at the Turin Motor Show in 1959. With its exceptional performance, the Wankel Spider was able to outpace its competitors at the time, the AH Sprite, MG Midget, Triumph Spitfire and the Fiat 850 Spider. However, the surcharge of almost 3,000 marks demanded for the Sport Prinz was not accepted by the market as desired. Even a drastic price reduction in 1966 could not compensate for the declining production figures, with only 581 units being built. Factory-prepared Wankel Spiders were very successful in motorsport. The then reigning German GT hill climb champion, Siegfried Spiess, dominated his class with six victories in seven races. The Spider also achieved respectable successes at the Monte. At the end of 1967, Spider production came to an end after 2,375 units.

In 1991, Mercedes-Benz presented its all-new S Class of the W 140 series, replacing the W 126 after a successful 12-year production run. The coupe variant followed one year later. Befitting its status as pinnacle of the Mercedes-Benz lineup, the luxury car was offered with the most powerful engines, either a 5.0 litre V8 delivering 235 kW (320 hp), or with a 6.0 litre V12, rated at 290 kW (394 hp).
Even though these cars were produced for only 7 years, they came with three different name tags: While early cars were still called 500 SEC or 600 SEC, then nomenclature was changed in accordance with the new company-wide naming scheme, and as of 1993, they became S 500 and S 600. In 1996, this was changed once more to become the CL class.
A new 4.2 litre V8 complemented the engine palette as of 1994.
Cars after the 1996 facelift had bumper-integrated parking sensors as standard, as well as Xenon lights or side airbags.
A total of 26,022 of these highly exclusive cars were built – a small number compared to over 400,000 W 140 sedans.

Sir William Lyons’ iconic XJ had been on the market for nearly three decades by the time Jaguar finally unveiled the successor model, named XJ40. Compared to its predecessor, the new Jaguar featured a more angular styling. It also brought an improved build quality, and the manufacturing process had been optimized for greater efficiency. The XJ40 remained in production until 1994, when it was replaced by the X300 – which re-introduced the more curvaceous looks of the original XJ while being mechanically similar to the XJ40. In 1997, in a significant break with company tradition, both the inline-6 cylinder as well as the V12 engine were phased out, and a new V8 introduced to replace them. The facelifted car was appropriately named X308. The V8 engine came in two sizes, with 3.2 or 4.0 litres of capacity, the latter also available in combination with a supercharger. All cars had an automatic 5-speed transmission. As was customary, Jaguar also offered Daimler and Vanden Plas variants of their luxury sedan.
Total production figures for these Jaguars amount to just over 200,000 units of the XJ40, 92,000 of the X300 and 126,000 for the X308, including the respective submodels.

Automobile size, redefined

With the appearance of the new S-Class in 1991, it rained criticism: The vehicles were too heavy, not at all up to date in their megalomania – loading capacity was too low, and to top it all off, they didn’t even fit on the Sylt-shuttle trains!
Those who didn’t care about all of the above, acquired a sedan that set new standards and came with a hoist of innovations: CAN bus, voice controlled car telephony, park distance control, ESP, double glazed laminated safety glass … things that nowadays have become automotive standard were here on board for the first time. The excellent workmanship and reliability bestowed many W 140 a second career outside Germany. Models of this series were the first to be offered with V12 engines. Incidentally, the Maybachs built until 2011 were largely based on the the W 140 series.
Like all large Mercedes limousines before, the 1990s S-Class will be a sought-after classic in the foreseeable future.

In 1974, Volkswagen presented the Golf – a great improvement over its predecessor, the Beetle, with its air-cooled rear-mounted engine. The Golf was a front-wheel drive car from the start, with water-cooled, transversely mounted engines – and a huge success. When the 3rd generation was introduced in 1991, it had once again become larger and significantly heavier. With the Golf VR6, a new attractive market niche was occupied. The 2.8 litre six-cylinder engine in a V-shape, with an unusually narrow angle of 15 degrees, was taken from the Passat series and was at the time the only passenger car in the compact class with a six-cylinder engine. This engine is a “two-valve”, which does not draw its power from high revs, but rather develops its power at low revs, casually. The Golf VR6 is a real Golf, too. There is no question of overpowering or exaggerated sportiness. The drive and chassis behave harmoniously with a high degree of driving safety. The so-called plus front axle in combination with the electronic differential lock, EDS, swallows up the suspected drive influences. Likewise the traction problems to be expected with powerful front-wheel-drive vehicles. The VR6 is a Golf that combines maximum driving pleasure with its six-cylinder engine and its comfort characteristics.

The first generation of the Corvette, as presented in 1953, was Chevrolet’s answer to Porsche and Jaguar: a compact roadster, light thanks to plastic bodywork and, from 1956 with the V8, also sporty. In 1963, the 2nd generation was presented, marketed under the name “Corvette Sting Ray”. It had a much improved chassis with independent rear suspension and disc brakes. But most importantly, there was a striking new, exciting design. Folding headlights were introduced – and became a trademark of the Corvette until the 6th generation appeared in 2005. With its “eyes” closed, the Corvette had a sharp-edged front in contrast to the elegant, flowing lines – like a stingray. In 1968, the 3rd generation appeared, which had a much more muscular appearance, but at the same time retained most of the C2’s engine and chassis components. This did not prevent it from becoming the longest-built generation of the Corvette; production ran for no less than 14 years.
In terms of engine power, there were essentially two groups, based on either the “small block” (around 5 liters) or “big block” (up to 7.4 liters, discontinued in 1975), with various transmission and gear ratio options.

Mercedes-Benz added a coupé to the 124 model series in 1987. The independence of the coupé, although the close technical and stylistic relationship to the saloon is recognisable, was retained. The floor assembly was taken over from the saloon, but the wheelbase and overall length were shorter. Other similarities are only the front end up to the A-pillar, the dashboard and the rear lights. Despite the B-pillar being overlooked, the Mercedes-Benz safety standard has been achieved by a reinforced A-pillar. The frameless side windows can be lowered completely. Due to the lack of mounting points for the front seat belts, the designer adopted the belt bringers of the C 126. The newly developed, high-revving two-valve six-cylinder, engine code M 103, moves the timeless coupé silkily and calmly. It underlines the virtues of a 3-litre six-cylinder engine with its smooth running and elasticity.
The Coupé was available in a total of five variants, plus an AMG variant.
This elegant Mercedes-Benz Coupé is a real eye-catcher due to its proportions and stylistic practicality.

A pearl for the overseas market – now she’s coming home!

The Mercedes-Benz R 107 roadster series, unveiled in 1971, became the convertible with the highest production numbers of any SL, with over 237,000 units built over 18 years, which also means the longest production-run of any Mercedes-Benz passenger car series ever.

The 560 SL (1985 to 1989) was conceived as an export model for the American, Australian and Japanese market and never officially offered in Europe. The 5.6 litre eight-cylinder engine (M 117) was created by lengthening the stroke of the 5.0 litre V8, it produces 170 kW (231 PS).

Only the Best “Made in Germany” for the States – the SL 560 US versions were shipped from the factory “fully loaded”. The only additional equipment on the options list was a seat heating.
