The Porsche 944 was presented at the IAA in 1981. Both technically and visually, it was based on the 924, which had appeared five years earlier. However, the Audi engine of the 924, which had been criticized by Porsche purists, was replaced by a genuine Porsche engine: a 2.5-liter inline four, essentially a halved 5.0-liter V8 from the 928.

A turbo version was introduced in 1985. Further power upgrades came with the 944 S in 1987 and the 944 S2 in 1989. The 3.0-liter inline four with 155 kW (211 hp) was the largest displacement inline four in a production passenger car when it debuted. The most powerful engine with 184 kW (250 hp) or optionally 221 kW (300 hp) was offered in the special 944 Turbo S model in 1988.
A convertible was only available in 1990 and 1991. Thanks to the transaxle layout, the 944’s roadholding was excellent, which is why it won the “Best Handling Production Car in America” award in 1984. In 1991, the 944 was replaced by the 968, which retained the characteristic styling elements of the 924/944.

Rock solid elegance from Germany

The 123 models were the most successful cars Mercedes ever built. In 1980, the W123 even beat rival Volkswagen, having more registrations than the all-time winner VW Golf. The long delivery time of up to three years had an interesting effect: Young used cars cost more than new ones.

The coupé was derived from the sedan and was presented in 1977. Its shorter wheelbase made it look more sturdy and sportive. All coupé models featured broad halogen headlights.

For every 24 limousines, Mercedes produced only one coupé, which is why the C123 was very early considered an eligible classic. Its high production quality makes it a very reliable vehicle, even today. In Germany, Mercedes sold them with four or six cylinder petrol motors, while clients in the US could also choose additional diesel models.

1967 saw a sensational double premiere at the Geneva Motor Show. Next to the Fiat Dino was the brand new Fiat 124 Coupé. This appealing 2+2-seater GT was designed by Mario Boano (designer of the Ferrari 250 GT “Boano”, among others). It was based on the floor assembly of the Fiat 124 saloon, which was extended by 8.5 centimetres for the coupé. Unlike some of its competitors, it also offered space for four people, so that the 124 Coupé could be described as a genuine Gran Turismo. The four-cylinder overhead twin-camshaft engine initially had a displacement of 1438 cm³ and produced 90 hp (66 kW). Four power-assisted disc brakes, double wishbones, a sports steering wheel and additional instruments provided information on oil pressure and cooling water temperature. 1970 saw a new edition of the Fiat 124 Coupé, which was internally called the BC Series. The designers replaced the single headlights at the front with twin headlights, the aluminum radiator grille gave way to a black plastic grille with a honeycomb pattern, and larger rear lights were used at the rear. Fiat discontinued production of the 124 Sport Coupé at the end of 1975.

In order to make its volume seller attractive for the new millennium, VW launched a quality initiative for its 4th generation Golf. Improvements in workmanship, higher standards in interior design and material and an altogether more upmarket look-and-feel were the aim. Available as of 1997 and in production until 2003 on the home market, the Golf IV continued the success story of its predecessors, becoming the bestselling car in Europe and winning various awards. A wide selection of engines was available, starting at 1.4 litres and 55 kW (75 hp) and ranging right up to the iconic, limited series R32 with 177 kW (241 hp) from 3.2 litres of capacity. Very popular with the customer base were the various implementations of the 1.9 litres direct injection turbo Diesel engine. Available body styles included the wagon, there was also the sedan, called Bora or Jetta depending on its target market, but no convertible: As had been the case with the Golf II, the previous model was adapted to visually resemble the current generation. Including all its derivatives, production figures totaled 4.9 million. Out of all those, a totally standard, 6-year old Golf IV made history: Pre-owned by Joseph Ratzinger, who had just become Pope Benedict XVI, it sold for nearly € 189,000 at an auction in 2005.

In 1974, Volkswagen had presented its first Golf – a great improvement over its predecessor, the VW beetle and its air-cooled engine in the rear. The Golf was, from the start, a front-wheel drive car, with water-cooled transverse engines – and hugely successful. After nine years, the second generation was introduced in 1983. The characteristic shape and basic concept remained unchanged, but the new series was slightly more rounded and significantly larger – 5,5 cm wider and a full 28 cm longer! The choice of available engines was large, starting with 40 kW (55 hp) in the basic model and going up all the way to 118 kW (160 hp) in the GTI G60 towards the end of the production run. A total of around 6.4 million Golf II were built, topping the registration statistics in many countries. Even today, the Golf II is still a common sight on German roads, which is due to their effective rust prevention and superior build quality.
The “Golf Country” (1990 – 1991) with four-wheel drive, higher ground clearance and bullbars anticipated the concept of modern-day SUVs, but not their success. A small series (100 copies) of the Golf II were built as electric vehicles “citySTROMer”. Interestingly, no factory convertible was offered, so the Golf I convertible (1980 – 1993) actually outlived the Golf II.

For over 50 years, there had not been any new Audi Convertible: When production of the 920 was halted in 1940 due to WWII, this marked the end of a tradition. Only in 1991 would there be a soft-top vehicle carrying the Audi brand name. It was based on the Audi 80 B4, which in itself was an evolution of the successful B3 series. The convertible benefitted from this tried and tested basis, as well as from the fact that Audi had introduced full galvanization for the B3.
At first, the convertible was only available with the well-known 2.3 litre 5-cylinder petrol engine. A 2.8 litre V6 followed in 1992, and 4-cylinder petrol and – for the first time ever in a convertible – turbo Diesel engines completed the lineup. All Audi convertibles had front wheel drive – meaning no quattro was on offer – and featured either 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. An electro-hydraulic opening mechnism for the soft-top was available as of 1993.
While the Audi 80 sedan was replaced by the 1st generation A4 in 1996, the convertible was continued until the year 2000. For the last two years of its production run, it was assembled by Karmann at Rheine. A total of 71,510 convertibles was built, which with their elegant design and high manufacturing quality are already considered classics today.

Production of the Triumph TR6 began in January 1969 as the successor to the TR5/TR250 series. Some chassis and suspension components of the successful predecessor series were adopted. The design of the new English roadster did not come from the Italian automobile designer Giovanni Michelotti, but the German body plant Karmann in Osnabrück took over the exterior design of the body. Design elements of the predecessors were also retained. The smooth lines of the body, the modified rear design with the enlarged trunk and the wider wheels make the roadster look flatter and faster. With a top speed of over 190 km/h, the powerful 2.5 L inline 6-cylinder engine with 105 kW/143 hp also makes its contribution. During its production period, which ended in July 1976, there were several modifications. Affected was also the transmission, which was replaced by the Triumph Stag unit from about mid-1971. The functional interior, comfortable seats, and clean-lined dashboard are popular features of the TR6. It embodies the appeal of a British roadster and remains an extremely popular sports car today. Its successor, the TR7, is a completely new model.

No matter how much you liked your VW, if you wanted a larger car in the 1950s – but no van – you had to look elsewhere, as the company had nothing to offer. This changed when VW presented the 1500, internally called Type 3, in 1961. It followed the basic engineering principle of the beetle, meaning it had an air-cooled engine in the rear, which in this case was a 1.5 litre flat-four with a power output of 33 kW (45 hp). Owing to the reduced height of the engine, there was some luggage space in the back, supplementing the main luggage compartment under the front bonnet, which also was significantly larger than that of the beetle. Body styles included a two-door sedan and station wagon, called Variant, and as of 1965, a fastback coupé, the TL. A 1.6 litre engine was added to the lineup, and in 1967, the VW 1600 E became the first German production car to feature an electronic fuel injection, the Bosch D-Jetronic.
For the 1969 facelift the front was lengthened by 12 cm, further increasing luggage capacity. The “long snout” remained in production until 1973 when it was replaced by the all-new Passat. All in all, over 2.5 million units of the Type 3 were built, almost half of them were station wagons.

Volkswagen T3 Westfalia

  • By:

Until recently, the VW T3 was such a common sight on German roads, many people wouldn’t believe it had already gained classic car status. But when, we ask you, have you last seen a truly well-maintained specimen? This Westfalia camper-van with the original Joker interior is one. The pop-top is tight and devoid of cracks. The well-designed and functional camping equipment is in great shape, its age of 36 years notwithstanding. It features a freshwater tank that can be filled both from the inside or outside, a hook-up inlet socket, and of course a gas stove, sink, and dual-action (12 V / 220 V) fridge, all of which work as they should.
As an early model T3, this camper has the twin-carburettor 2.0 litre air-cooled boxer engine installed, which delivers 51 kW (70 hp) of power. Mechanically, the bus is totally sound according to the consignor. The camper has valid technical approval until 06/2017, German registration documents and historic plates. Owner’s manual and service booklet are available.
Wide-base tyres have been fitted and the suspension lowered – so that an overall height of 1.97 m is achieved, enabling access to all standard-sized garages.
A bicycle rack and tow bar complete the picture of a fully usable, classic Westfalia camper-van.

For many of its followers, this is the ultimate version of the VW Bus: The Volkswagen Type 2 (T3), as it was officially referred to, the third generation of VW’s forever-popular van. It still had the engine where they thought it belonged: in the rear. In fact, early T3 models featured the identical air-cooled engines of the predecessor, even though the new van was much roomier and also a fair bit heavier. 1981 the first Diesel-powered T3 were made available, and as of 1982, a new generation of water-cooled boxer engines became standard. Regular improvements, such as the introduction of fuel injection or catalytic converters kept the T3 up to date. In 1985, the 4 wheel-drive option called Syncro was released.
Regarding body types, the T3 continued to offer a great selection, including transporter, 2-door utility, twin-cab utility, and several trim levels for the van, topped in 1985 by the popular Multivan. Camping fans’ favourite, however, remained the Westfalia variant, a well-equipped camper van with pop-top.
In 1990, the successor model, the front-engined, front-wheel-drive T4 entered the market. However, the T3 remained in production in South Africa for another 13 years, right to the end of the T4 production in Germany!

The Jaguar 2.4 / 3.4 litre, which was later called the MK 1, was in no way a bad car: technically advanced, elegant and – at least in the 160 hp version – also sporty. With over 35,000 units sold, it was a clear success. And yet: In 1959, William Lyons decided it was time for a major overhaul. Essentially, the car was redesigned above the beltline, with considerably more glass around the passenger compartment, as well as minor modifications regarding the radiator grille and the arrangement of the lights.
Technical changes include, in addition to the more powerful engines, the rear track widening and the standard four-disc brakes.
The MK 2 is thus considered the model for all modern sports saloons. Unsurprisingly, this model was a great success for Jaguar, with over 90,000 cars sold, including the late 240 and 340 versions
