The dream of Eastern German mobility

– 2 stroke boxer with 350ccm and 17 HP
– Original GDR letter available
– The motorcycle was completely restored by Klaus Breuer in 2000
– Driven again in 2019 for the first time after restoration
– Valid Technical control until 04/2021
– First registration 01/1958
– two-seater
– 115 km/h

The BK 350 (“boxer cardan” and 350 cm³ displacement) was a motorcycle model of VEB Motorradwerke Zschopau (MZ) and was produced from 1952 to 1959. The motorcycle was the first new development of the old DKW factory in Zschopau after the end of the war and initially came off the production line under the name of the state GDR vehicle construction association “IFA”.
The BK 350 had an unusual engine design. It was powered by a two-stroke boxer engine. This design has not been used in any other vehicle to date. The engine performed max. 15, later 17 hp. The power transmission to the rear wheel took place (and thus in contrast to all later MZ models) via the cardan shaft.

The car manufacturer Opel needed a vehicle that would close the gap between the Kadett and the Rekord. Production of the Ascona model, whose name came from a place in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland, therefore began in 1970. This family car had an independent body, while the engine was sourced from the Opel Kadett. Three generations of the vehicle were built during the 18 years of production: The Ascona A was available as a two- and four-door sedan as well as a three-door station wagon, each in different equipment lines. The engines had capacities ranging from 1.2 to 1.9 litres and power ratings between 44 kW (60 hp) and 66 kW (90 hp). In 1975 the era of the Ascona B began. The body became larger and the vehicle, now only available as a sedan, was given a more up-market look. Worth mentioning is the special model 400, with which Walter Röhrl won the World Rally Championship in 1982. As of 1981, the Generation C was produced, now with front-wheel drive and transversely mounted engine. At times this became the best selling car in Germany. In addition to the sedans, there was now a 5-door hatchback variant. Two facelifts in the years 1984 and 1986 brought new front headlights, indicators or rear lights. In 1988 the Ascona was replaced by the Opel Vectra A.

“La déesse” means “the goddess” in French, and the pun was not unintended. When the DS was presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1955, its extravagant styling made it look like something from a different universe to most people. Citroën was owned by the tyre manufacturer Michelin at that time, who put great emphasis on technological advances. The hydropneumatic suspension, designed by Paul Magès, had been used on the rear axle of the 15 CV, the DS’s predecessor, as of 1954 – but here it was employed on all four wheels, giving the car a superior ride quality and variable ground clearance. Hydraulics were also used for the brakes, power steering, and – for early models at least – also for clutch and transmission. The “snake pit”, as the mass of hydraulic pipes in the engine bay was jokingly called – overwhelmed many contemporary mechanics, but the systems proved to be very reliable. The DS (and its submodels ID, D Super and D Special) remained in production for a full two decades, with various redesigns, the most noteworthy in 1967, which put the headlights, together with a set of directional lights, under an aerodynamic glass cover. A station wagon (“Break”) and factory convertible variant was also available.
Beyond doubt, the DS is one of the greatest design icons of automotive history.

In 1962, Alfa Romeo presented the successor to the Giulietta, the 105 series Giulia, as a sporty four-door family sedan – arguably one of the greatest Alfa series of all times. A year later, a coupe version was added to the lineup. It came with a slightly shortened wheelbase and even more powerful engines, which in combination with the masterly styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Bertone made for an extremely popular car. Model designations kept changing, there are said to be 16 different versions of the coupe, which is why they are generally simply referred to as “the Bertone”.
All engines were inline-four cylinder units, which varied in capacity from 1.3 to 2.0 litres and power output between 64 kW (87 hp) and 96 kW (131 hp). Even the smaller ones in the GT Junior entry models were more than able to deal with the kerb weight of just over one ton.
Some 222,000 units of the “Bertone Coupe” were built in the course of the 14 years’ production span which ended in 1977. The surviving examples are mostly in collectors’ hands and prices are continually on the rise.

Based on the R107, Mercedes created a sports coupé with the series designation C107, which was first presented in 1971 and marketed as SLC. The SLC’s wheelbase was a full 36 cm longer than that of the SL. The coupé was a 5-seater, slightly heavier than the convertible, but the better drag coefficient made up for that, their top speed was identical. Its distinguishing styling cues were the very large, curved rear window and the slats in the back – born out of necessity in order to fully lower the rear side windows.
There were the M 110 six-cylinder engine, as well as the M 116 and M 117 eight-cylinder engines to choose from. The most powerful version, the 450 SLC 5.0 or, as of 1980, 500 SLC offered 176 kW (240 hp).
The coupé was produced for 10 years – a long time, though considerably shorter than the 18 years of the R107. During this period 62,888 units were built – much fewer than the convertible variant.

The essence of automotive beauty
No other than Enzo Ferrari called the E-Type the most beautiful car ever made, and even if beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, not too many people would have contradicted him since. The debut of the XK-E, called “E-Type”, in 1961 was nothing short of a sensation. Its unrivalled elegant styling was complemented by plenty of power, and all of that at a relatively moderate price.
Over the years, the successful model was modified in several ways: From the spring of 1966 there was a 2 + 2-seater version with an extended wheelbase. In 1967, the headlight covers fell victim to American safety regulations. On the engine side, there were six-cylinder engines with 3.8 and later 4.2 litres, and as of 1971, twelve-cylinder motors to choose from. Production of the compact two-seaters ceased in 1971, the so-called Series III was only offered as a 2+2-seater.
A classic of superlatives, that’s all there is to it.

In 1995, the prototype of the Audi TT was presented at the IAA in Frankfurt and at the Tokyo Motor Show. The public’s impression was enormously positive. Production of the sports car, whose name TT, Tradition and Technology, refers to sports cars of the 1950s and not unintentionally to the Tourist Trophy motorcycle race on the Isle of Man, began in 1998. The car, which was based on the VW Golf IV platform, was initially offered only as a coupe and with a 1.8-liter turbocharged engine. A TTS Roadster version appeared a year later. Approximately 275,000 units of the first generation (8N) were produced. In 2006, the second generation (8J) appeared, now based on the platform of the Audi A3 8P, with many technical and some exterior innovations. Worth mentioning is the optional Audi magnetic ride, a damping system that allows better adaptation to the driving situation. In addition to the different variants of the car, there were also two particularly powerful ones: the TTS and TT RS with up to 250 kW (340 hp). The third generation (FV) has been on offer since 2014. The vehicle received a facelift, but it was not fundamentally changed. The planned discontinuation of the Audi TT was announced in 2019, but currently the probably last gasoline-powered version is still being produced.

Mercedes-Benz 190 Db Ponton

While other car manufacturers had quickly followed the pioneers Citroen and Opel, who started using unitary construction designs as early as the mid-thirties, Mercedes was a late adopter: Their first unibody car, the model 180 of the W120 series, appeared in 1953. Originally available with a 1.8 litre petrol engine only, Mercedes added a Diesel powerplant to its lineup in 1954, which – while not being a true first – essentially contributed to the widespread use of this engine type in passenger cars.
In 1956 the family of the “small Ponton” grew larger again by the appearance of the 190 from the W121 series. While Mercedes-Benz only built a four-door sedan, the coachbuilder Binz offered other different versions such as station wagons, the first of their kind to be officially marketed by Mercedes. The W121 differed from the W120 by a slightly wider radiator grille, chrome trim strips, quarter-vent windows in the front doors and larger rear lights. The new four-cylinder engine with overhead camshaft and 55 kW (75 hp) made a top speed of 140 km/h possible. As of 1958, a version with a 1.9-litre diesel engine was also available, which was particularly popular with taxi companies. One year later it was decided to rework the petrol engine, resulting in the 190 b version with an increased power output of 59 kW (80 hp). In 1961 the Ponton Mercedes was replaced by the zeitgeisty “fintail” model W110.

Volkswagen Käfer

This pretty VW Beetle is what is known in California as a “Black Plate Car” – that’s what vehicles are referred to which were already on the road in 1963 (when all vehicles were issued the new plates) or registered no later than 1969 and then spent all their life in the virtually rainless “Sunshine State”. This one was delivered new to the US in 1958, and is said to have been with its first owner in Palm Springs right until 2014! The underbody has never been welded, and even the light blue paintjob is, apart from clearly visible patch-ups, mostly original. Chrome is good, too.
The odometer reads an unwarranted mileage of 63,500 mls. According to the consignor, the car was subjected to a minor overhaul around 5,000 miles ago. The black leatherette interior is in a well-kept condition, as are the matching colour door panels and the grey carpets.
A contemporaneous radio is also on board. The exhaust is, as can be seen on the photos, of course not original. One of the highlights of this early beetle are its semaphore indicators (in working order).
The VW has valid technical approval until 02/2018 and historic plates.
Our recommendation: Buy it. Drive it. Catch people’s eyes!

Who has not heard of the Beetle that runs and runs and runs?

As early as 1945, mass production of the VW Beetle was commenced – the last one rolled off the line in 2003. The VW Beetle was produced over 20,000,000 times and had become a classic during its production period, enjoying a wide fan base right until today.
In early 2014, more than 10 percent of all registered classic cars in Germany were “creepy crawlies”, making it beyond any doubt the most popular classic car of all times.

Over the decades, the beetle has undergone numerous changes, the most obvious concerned the shape of the rear window. The two-piece oval rear window (“split”) was replaced in 1953 by a larger one-piece oval window. As of August 1957, this was replaced by a much wider rear window. Quite a few owners of older models had these “modern” windows installed subsequently, making the original singular-oval window variants more desirable and valuable today.

The Daimler 250 V8 was a four-door sedan from the British motor vehicle manufacturer Daimler, built between October 1962 and mid-1969. In 1960, Jaguar acquired the Daimler Motor Company and with the need to increase sales. In order to bring the company back into the black, a new model was developed based on the body and equipment of the Jaguar Mark 2. The main difference to Jag MK2 was the installation of Daimler’s own 2.5 liter V8 engine, which was initially only coupled with an automatic transmission. The V8 twin carburettor engine and the Borg-Warner Type 35 automatic transmission came from the SP 250 sports car.
With higher quality changes to the equipment, including the use of the radiator grille and the trunk handle with the wave shape (fluted grille) typical of Daimler bodies, the English sedan was able to revive Daimler sales.
