Ferrari Mondial QV Cabrio

This rare 2+2 seater Ferrari Mondial Quattrovalvole convertible is one out of a total of merely 629 open models of its type ever built.

The red 1985 sports car has recently been imported from the US. The interior in black leather with the typical high-quality workmanship is in a good state of preservation and gives credibility to the unwarranted mileage of only 22,400 mls.
This model apparently still bears most of its original paintwork, which is in a fine state regarding its age of 30 years, virtually free of visible rust. A slight dent rear right and a small bump in the trunk are blemishes worth mentioning. The original Ferrari rims are very attractive. The soft top gives a near-new impression with only the slightest traces of wear.

In this beautiful mid-engine convertible you needn’t go without air conditioning, nor without a subsequently installed subwoofer in the passenger footwell.

All in all a very nice open-top sports car that has always been a rarity on the roads.

The family Ferrari

It turned out longer and wider than its predecessor and offered sufficient space even for rear-seat passengers – while being a true mid-engine sports car. This combination is highly unusual, if not unique for a production car, even more so for one available as a convertible.

Pininfarina drew the elongate lines of the Mondial 8, which was first presented at the Geneva show in 1980. The low-pollutant V8 with 214 hp was not considered powerful enough by all friends of the house, which led Ferrari to come up with the Quattrovalvole, some two years or 703 vehicles later, boasting 240 hp for the desired extra bit of oomph. Of this, a total of 1,773 units were built, among them 629 convertibles.

The year 1985 brought a major facelift, since then the Mondial was offered as a 3.2 delivering 270 hp. In this form, a total of 987 coupés and 810 convertibles were produced until 1988.

NSU Ro 80

Such a fine sight, this Ro 80. This example of the technology pioneer has, according to the previous owner, spent almost two decades “hibernating” in a garage, sheltered, but completely unmoved. Accordingly, more than a little “spring cleaning” will be required, before the 2-disc Wankel engine will purr like on day one. The vehicle is technically in an untinkered original condition – compression is ok, but the exact scope of the work required has not been determined.

The inside gives a well-kept impression. The beige velour blends well with the original paint in blue metallic. The sky is clean, as are the seats, and the interior altogether without major flaws. The original radio is also on board.
The chrome parts are in good, albeit slightly tarnished state. The vehicle is reportedly accident-free, only a slight dent in the driver’s door casts a small shadow on the overall picture.

All in all a car that absolutely deserves to be carefully restored and recommissioned. It will be worth it!

A connoisseur’s sedan – Revolutionary technology in designer costume

When NSU presented the Ro 80 in 1967, the car created quite a stir, what with numerous innovations all packed into one vehicle. Above and beyond all else, there’s the Wankel engine, which unfortunately was rather damage-prone at first, ruining the reputation of the otherwise ingenious engineering feat, even if the problems got completely resolved over time. Other features were, among others, disc brakes on all four wheels, or electro-pneumatically actuated semi-automatic gearshift. Then as now an eye-catcher: the wedge-shaped body, anticipating design tendencies by about two decades.

The enthusiasts’ scene of the Ro 80 owners is particularly active, so it is no problem to use one of these stylish cars as a daily driver. What is, however, rather difficult to describe is this unique ride on the motorway, with the engine noise getting lesser and lesser as the speed increases.

Packard Patrician 400

A veritable gem for collectors of vintage American automobiles!

This Packard Patrician 400 is an early model, built in 1951. It features the highest trim level available at its time. The four-door sedan comes according to its previous owner in an unrestored, original state. Owing to the very dry conditions in the desert state of Arizona, it is largely free of visible rust and still bears an ancient paintwork with truly charming patina.

Technically, too, the Patrician is in a very decent state for its age. The straight eight engine with a capacity of 5.4 litres starts up and runs, the car is conditionally fit to drive.

The Packard has been cleared through customs and comes with the US title.

This is a very rare specimen which ought to cut a fine figure at classic car get-togethers.

Packard’s Swan Song

The Packard company had, before WWII, established a name as a premium car manufacturer. Their somewhat traditional approach with regards to both engineering and styling had served them well in the past, but became increasingly problematic in the 1950s, when constant model changes became standard. The all-new model series released in 1951 sold successfully for a few years, but could not prevent the demise of the Packard company in 1956.

The Patrician 400 was the premium trim level of the series, with plenty of chrome, including chrome teeth in the grile and chrome ports on the rear fenders. Its interiour was luxurious. The engine was still a straight eight, with 5.3 litres of capacity, which ran very smoothly owing to nine main bearings on the crankshaft. All Patricians came with a “Ultramatic” automatic transmission.
The 1955 model year brought a last facelift and the introduction of a more modern V8 engine. It came too late to save the dying swan.

– 1985 Porsche 944 coupe
– 3 owners from new (by first 2 owners used as demonstration vehicle)
– since 1987 with the same owner
– attractive colour combination, guards red exterior with beige leather interior
– 2.5 litre inline-four cylinder engine producing 120 kW (163 hp)
– delivered and always registered in Germany
– reportedly accident-free car
– targa roof, Blaupunkt Heilbronn radio
– German registration documents, new technical approval upon purchase

The Porsche 944 was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1981. It was based technically and optically on the 924 which had come out 5 years earlier. The Audi sourced engine of the 924, which had come under criticism by Porsche purists, was replaced by a genuinly Porsche 2.5 litre straight-4, which was effectively half of the 928’s 5.0 litre V8.
A turbo version was introduced in 1985, further power increases came with the 944 S in 1987 and the 944 S2 in 1989. The strongest engine available in a 944 was a 3.0 litre with 184 kW (250 hp) and a top speed of 260 km/h – impressive performance for a 4-cylinder car!
A convertible was only available in 1990 and 1991. Owing to its transaxle layout, handling of the 944 was superb, which is why it won the “Best Handling Production Car in America” award in 1984. In 1991, the 944 was replaced by the 968 which retained the characteristic styling cues of the 924/ 944.

– All chrome parts: Radiator grille, bumper, lamp rings etc. in top condition
– Next HU in May 2024, H-approval available

The Jaguar 2.4 / 3.4 litre, which was later called the MK 1, was in no way a bad car: technically advanced, elegant and – at least in the 160 hp version – also sporty. With over 35,000 units sold, it was a clear success. And yet: In 1959, William Lyons decided it was time for a major overhaul. Essentially, the car was redesigned above the beltline, with considerably more glass around the passenger compartment, as well as minor modifications regarding the radiator grille and the arrangement of the lights.
Technical changes include, in addition to the more powerful engines, the rear track widening and the standard four-disc brakes.
The MK 2 is thus considered the model for all modern sports saloons. Unsurprisingly, this model was a great success for Jaguar, with over 90,000 cars sold, including the late 240 and 340 versions

Rare and popular 993, almost in a new car condition

In late 1993, Porsche presented the successor to the 964, internally named 993, as the 4th generation of its 911 model. It was the last of the air-cooled models and as this marked the end of an era. Consequently, the 993 has become one of the most popular 911 variants. From the outside, the 993 is visually distinguishable by the smoother bumpers, the larger rear wing and the more flared wheel arches. Of course, it also brought a number of technical improvements over its predecessor: A 6-speed gearshift became standard. As of 1995, the Tiptronic was improved and steering wheel controls added. The ABS brake system was also improved, and numerous other components altered. In 1996, an all-new Targa was added to the lineup, it featured a retractable glass roof instead of the removable roof section of previous models.
Needless to say, the power output was upped for the new 911 once again. Early 993 Carreras with their M64/05 engines produce 200 kW (272 hp), later ones have the M64/21 engine with 210 kW (285 hp). The Carrera RS version from this era topped this by producing no less than 221 kW (300 hp) – from an air-cooled, naturally aspirated 3.8 litre 6-cylinder engine.

Automobile size, redefined

With the appearance of the new S-Class in 1991, it rained criticism: The vehicles were too heavy, not at all up to date in their megalomania – loading capacity was too low, and to top it all off, they didn’t even fit on the Sylt-shuttle trains!
Those who didn’t care about all of the above, acquired a sedan that set new standards and came with a hoist of innovations: CAN bus, voice controlled car telephony, park distance control, ESP, double glazed laminated safety glass … things that nowadays have become automotive standard were here on board for the first time. The excellent workmanship and reliability bestowed many W 140 a second career outside Germany. Models of this series were the first to be offered with V12 engines. Incidentally, the Maybachs built until 2011 were largely based on the the W 140 series.
Like all large Mercedes limousines before, the 1990s S-Class will be a sought-after classic in the foreseeable future.

Genuine Corvette C3 Stingray as daily driver

The first generation Corvette, as presented in 1953, was Chevrolet’s reply to Porsche and Jaguar: A compact roadster which was lightweight – owing to its fibreglass body on a steel frame – and, with the introduction of a V8 in 1956, also sporty. In 1963, the second generation, marketed as Corvette Sting Ray, was released. It had a significantly improved chassis with independent rear wheel suspension and disc brakes. But above all, it featured a strikingly new and exciting design. Retractable headlamps were introduced – and became a Corvette hallmark until the 6th generation made its debut in 2005. With closed “eyes”, the Corvette had a sharp-edged front to contrast its elegant, flowing lines: stingray-like, indeed. In 1968, the third generation was introduced, which had a much more muscular appearance while retaining most of the engine and chassis components from the C2. This didn’t stop it from becoming the Corvette model with the longest production run, no less than 14 years!
In terms of motorisation, there were essentially two groups of engines based on either the “small block” (around 5 litres) or “big block” (up to 7.4 litres, discontinued 1975), with various transmissions and axle ratios.

Timeless top-class classic in extremely well-kept overall condition

In the early 1960s, Mercedes-Benz found itself in a bit of a predicament: Its luxury sedan, the W189 “Adenauer” was beginning to look distinctly outdated. Its heir, the “Grand Mercedes” 600 (W100) was under development, but not quite ready. To bridge the gap, the existing W111 series was shouted a special trim level with an extra helping of chrome, leather and wood, as well as the large aluminum-block 3.0 litre 6-cylinder engine and start-of-the-art technology including air suspension and power steering. Known by its internal code W112, the 300 SE became the rarest and most prestigious of the “tailfin” family. 5,202 sedans were built until 1965, plus an additional 1,546 with long wheelbase. The two-door variants, available from 1962 until 1967, were even rarer: Only 2,419 coupés and 708 convertibles were manufactured – in the truest sense of the word, largely by hand – and sold to affluent customers, mostly in the US and other export markets.
Build quality was nothing short of excellent, further strengthening the reputation Mercedes-Benz had aquired as a luxury car maker around the world, and ensuring that right until today, half a century later, the popularity of these cars remains unbroken.
