Jaguar XJ 12 CoupƩ

Let’s not get things confused: Blackjack is a popular card game, played in casinos around the world, and it’s all about the number 21. This here is a Black Jag, and it’s all about the 12: The mighty 5.3 litre 12-cylinder engine is what sets it apart, being de facto a unique selling point when the car was new. Built in 1978, the Series II XJ started life as a right-hand drive car. At some point in time, the Jaguar has been partly restored, repainted – not a bad idea, seeing that the original colour appears to have been baby blue – and converted to left-hand drive. The overall impression of this very elegant coupĆ© is highly convincing: The black leather interior – believed to be original – is in good shape with an acceptable degree of patina. The burlwood dashboard, an absolute must-have for a British luxury car, is almost devoid of cracks, and the black headliner unstained. Engine compartment and boot both look clean and dry. The paint from 2013 and the chrome parts shine as befits a noble Jaguar. The XJ features power windows and centre armrests, both front and rear. Of course it also has the Borg Warner BW 12 automatic gearbox installed. The odometer reads a low mileage of not yet 67,000 km, which can however not be vouched for. The Black Jag has only last year received a new windscreen and new fuel tanks, and the front axle as well as the driveshaft have been overhauled. It comes with technical approval valid until 08/2016, German registration documents and historic plates.

The XJ may be regarded as Sir William Lyons’ masterpiece. It was the last car the co-founder of the Jaguar company designed, and what he had created in 1968 turned out to be perennial: The luxury sedan was built over 24 years with only minor modifications regarding the bodywork.
The XJ effectively replaced not only the S series, but the 420 and Mk II along with it, becoming the sole Jaguar saloon and one of the best known British motorcars. At first, only the XJ6 was available, but in 1972, a 12-cylinder version was added, the XJ12, at that time the world’s only mass-produced 12-cylinder sedan.
The first major facelift for the 1974 model year brought raised front bumpers and, consequently, a flatter radiator grille which made the XJ appear even more slender and elegant.
In 1979 the XJ was facelifted once more, incorporating a mild redesign by Pininfarina while largely retaining Sir Lyons’ original lines. Over the whole production span, around 318,000 XJ6 and XJ12 were produced, among them only 9,378 coupes.
One of the pecularities of the XJ is that it is equipped with two separate fuel tanks positioned on each side of the boot, each with its own chrome filler cap and a changeover switch on the dash.

Mercedes-Benz 560 SL

– the top model of Mercedes-Benz’s R107 series, not offered in Europe when new
– imported from the US in 2016
– clean Carfax report without gaps, 17 records
– original owner’s manual, service booklet and various other documents
– bumpers and headlights converted to European specs
– rare colour combination of silver paint and brown leather interior
– new dark brown soft top
– original Becker Grand Prix radio, climate control, car alarm, airbag
– valid technical approval until 02/2018 and historic plates

The Mercedes-Benz roadsters of the R107 series replaced the W113 “pagoda” in 1971. While the outgoing model only featured 6-cylinder engines, Mercedes had planned the new car with enough room for larger power plants under the bonnet, obviously with the North-American market as their main target – and indeed, that is where the SL proved most successful. Over a production run of a full 18 years, a total of 237,287 convertibles were built at the factory’s Sindelfingen plant, most of them equipped with V8 engines of varying capacity as 350, 380, 420, 450, 500 and 560 SL. 6-cylinder models were also offered, originally as 280 SL from 1974-1985 and later as 300 SL from 1985-1989.
The 560 SL was produced exclusively for the Japanese, American and Australian markets. Even faster, however, was the 500 SL with its European specifications, which was not sold in the US due to emission restraints.
Through continuous innovation over the many model years, the R107 set plenty of standards. When it was finally replaced by the R129 in 1989, it was already becoming one of the perennial automobile classics.

Mercedes-Benz 190 Db Ponton

– robust and thrifty 1.9 litre 4-cylinder Diesel engine
– 4-speed manual gearbox
– bordeaux exterior and brown leatherette interior
– beige folding roof
– with the same owner for the past 29 years
– large number of new spare parts purchased and fitted over the years
– cavity and underbody sealed (Tuff-Coty Dinol) in 1992
– engine revised in 2000, since then about 5,000 km travelled
– new set of tyres in 2017
– German registration documents, valid technical approval until 07/2020 and historic plates

While other car manufacturers had quickly followed the pioneers Citroen and Opel, who started using unitary construction designs as early as the mid-thirties, Mercedes was a late adopter: Their first unibody car, the model 180 of the W120 series, appeared in 1953. Originally available with a 1.8 litre petrol engine only, Mercedes added a Diesel powerplant to its lineup in 1954, which – while not being a true first – essentially contributed to the widespread use of this engine type in passenger cars.
In 1956 the family of the “small Ponton” grew larger again by the appearance of the 190 from the W121 series. While Mercedes-Benz only built a four-door sedan, the coachbuilder Binz offered other different versions such as station wagons, the first of their kind to be officially marketed by Mercedes. The W121 differed from the W120 by a slightly wider radiator grille, chrome trim strips, quarter-vent windows in the front doors and larger rear lights. The new four-cylinder engine with overhead camshaft and 55 kW (75 hp) made a top speed of 140 km/h possible. As of 1958, a version with a 1.9-litre diesel engine was also available, which was particularly popular with taxi companies. One year later it was decided to rework the petrol engine, resulting in the 190 b version with an increased power output of 59 kW (80 hp). In 1961 the Ponton Mercedes was replaced by the zeitgeisty “fintail” model W110.

Porsche 911 C2 Cabrio (993)

– 1994 Porsche 911 C2 convertible
– originally delivered to Italy
– re-imported to Germany a few years ago
– partly repainted in its original colour, polar silver metallic
– good condition with minor visual impairments
– midnight blue leather interior with appropriate degree of patina
– electrically operated, matching colour convertible top in good state of preservation
– fog lights, anti-theft package, dual airbags, power steering
– climate control, electrically adjustable seats and windblocker.
– original 17″ cup wheels with near-new Conti tyres

In late 1993, Porsche presented the successor to the 964, internally named 993, as the 4th generation of its 911 model. It was the last of the air-cooled models and as this marked the end of an era. Consequently, the 993 has become one of the most popular 911 variants. From the outside, the 993 is visually distinguishable by the smoother bumpers, the larger rear wing and the more flared wheel arches. Of course, it also brought a number of technical improvements over its predecessor: A 6-speed gearshift became standard. As of 1995, the Tiptronic was improved and steering wheel controls added. The ABS brake system was also improved, and numerous other components altered. In 1996, an all-new Targa was added to the lineup, it featured a retractable glass roof instead of the removable roof section of previous models.
Needless to say, the power output was upped for the new 911 once again. Early 993 Carreras with their M64/05 engines produce 200 kW (272 hp), later ones have the M64/21 engine with 210 kW (285 hp). The Carrera RS version from this era topped this by producing no less than 221 kW (300 hp) – from an air-cooled, naturally aspirated 3.8 litres 6-cylinder engine.

The successor to the very popular E30 was presented in 1990 as the third generation of BMW’s 3 series. Internally called E36, the new sedan was considerably larger (and pricier) than its predecessor. It introduced completely new styling cues, such as the glass covers over the traditional double headlights, the forward-slanting kidney grille or the higher rear section. There were a variety of available body styles: The 2-door sedan had become an elegant coupĆ© which shared very few parts with the 4-door variant. A shorter hatchback called Compact was added in 1994. In 1995, the Touring station wagon followed. A factory convertible as well as the (rare) Baur convertible, offered in the E36 series for the last time, and the Z3 roadster (E36/7), based on the E36 Compact platform, made the lineup complete.
The choice of engines was huge, with no petrol engine producing less than 73 kW (100 hp). Top of the range was the M3, which in 1992 offered 210 kW (286 hp) from a 3.0 litre engine, later being replaced by a 3.2 litre, 236 kW (321 hp) powerplant in 1997. 4- and 6-cylinder diesel engines were also available. The E36 was built totalling 2.5 million units at the BMW plants in Munich, Regensburg, Dingolfing as well as at the newly built Spartanburg factory in the US.

Even a hugely successful car series needs to be replaced eventually, so the Mercedes W123, a volume seller with over 2.7 million units, was superseded by the W124 in 1984. For the next decade and more, this Mercedes defined the standard for mid-size luxury cars. The styling came from Bruno Sacco, and engineering as well as build quality were nothing short of excellent – so much so, that its fans have taken to nicknaming the W124 “the last true Mercedes”. Despite its somewhat box-shaped lines with the prominent radiator grille, typical for Mercedes cars of its era, the W124 actually had a very low drag coefficient of 0.28 (with slim tires).
A wide selection of engines was available: petrol engines with 4, 6 or 8 cylinders and diesel engines with 4, 5 or 6 cylinders. Apart from the sedan, which was by far the most common body style, there were also station wagons (as of 1985), coupĆ©s (1987) and convertibles (1991), as well as rare long-wheelbase variants. The W124 was facelifted in 1989 and then again in 1993, when the name “E-Class” was introduced.
Production numbers of the W124 reached almost the level of its predecessor, totaling 2,562,143 vehicles.

At the 1989 Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz presented the new SL from the R129 series. Its predecessor had been on the market for no less than 18 years, so the target group was more than ready for the new car and received it enthusiastically – so much so that early customers had to put up with a delivery period of several years. The aerodynamical wedge-shape design by Bruno Sacco won the international “Car Design Award”. Technologically, the new SL was very advanced, especially with regards to its safety features. They comprised a sensor-controlled automatic roll-over bar which would be raised within 0.3 seconds if needed, as well as integral seats.
The soft top mechanism was no longer manually operated as it had been in the R107, but electro-hydraulically, it opened and closed within 30 seconds. The aluminium hardtop weighed about 10 kg less than the one of its predecessor.
The R129 was available with a variety of engines, from 2.8 litres of capacity all the way up to 7.3 litres in the rare AMG V12 variants. A total of 204,940 examples were built over the course of 12 years, with two facelifts in 1995 and 1998, most of them equipped with V8 engines.

Volkswagen Golf III 2.0 GTI “Edition”

– VW Golf III GTI from penultimate year of production run, 1997
– 2.0 litre 4-cylinder engine with 85 kW (116 hp) of power
– silver metallic paint in good condition
– special “GTI Edition” model with Recaro sports seats ex works
– very attractive interior with only slight traces of use
– power windows, air condition, trip computer, car alarm
– sports suspension, dual airbags, tinted windows, original VW gamma radio installed
– German registration documents with 4 entries (3 owners within one family)
– certainly one of the nicer Golf III GTI in untinkered condition

In 1974, Volkswagen had presented its first Golf – a great improvement over its predecessor, the VW beetle and its air-cooled engine in the rear. The Golf was, from the start, a front-wheel drive car, with water-cooled transverse engines – and hugely successful. After nine years, the second generation was introduced in 1983. The characteristic shape and basic concept remained unchanged, but the new series was slightly more rounded and significantly larger – 5,5 cm wider and a full 28 cm longer. When the 3rd generation was presented in 1991, it had again grown larger and significantly heavier. The “Variant”, a station wagon, first became available in 1994. A new convertible was also added to the lineup, finally sending the Golf I convertible into retirement after 13 years.
For the Golf III, the choice of engines started at 1.4 litres of capacity and went up to the powerful 2.9 litre VR6 producing 142 kW (193 hp). Many Golf III were sold with the new direct-injection turbo diesel engines (TDI), available as of 1993 and upgraded in 1996. Unfortunately, in terms of rust prevention and build quality, the 3rd generation couldn’t quite match its predecessor.

Daimler designed the G-Class for the fearless ride over hill and dale, snow and ice, scree and steep slopes – and knows something else. Off-road capability has always been a top priority for the vehicle, which was launched in 1979. Otherwise it could not have asserted itself against the relentless competition over a period of forty years.
The G-model has been built in the Puch plant in Graz-Thondorf from the start. The new G-Class of the 463 series has also been manufactured in Styria since May 2018. Since 1979, Mercedes-Benz has been supplying engines, axles, steering and large body pressed parts to Graz from various locations in Germany. Series production starts in February 1979 shortly after the world premiere. The GelƤndefahrzeug Gesellschaft (GfG) founded by both companies in 1977 is responsible for this.
The designers from Daimler skilfully combine the large, smooth surfaces of the body with the technically specified properties such as large slope angles at the front and rear and a comparatively large vehicle height with a rather narrow overall width.
