The successor to the very popular E30 was presented in 1990 as the third generation of BMW’s 3 series. Internally called E36, the new sedan was considerably larger (and pricier) than its predecessor. It introduced completely new styling cues, such as the glass covers over the traditional double headlights, the forward-slanting kidney grille or the higher rear section. There were a variety of available body styles: The 2-door sedan had become an elegant coupé which shared very few parts with the 4-door variant. A shorter hatchback called Compact was added in 1994. In 1995, the Touring station wagon followed. A factory convertible as well as the (rare) Baur convertible, offered in the E36 series for the last time, and the Z3 roadster (E36/7), based on the E36 Compact platform, made the lineup complete.
The choice of engines was huge, with no petrol engine producing less than 73 kW (100 hp). Top of the range was the M3, which in 1992 offered 210 kW (286 hp) from a 3.0 litre engine, later being replaced by a 3.2 litre, 236 kW (321 hp) powerplant in 1997. 4- and 6-cylinder diesel engines were also available. The E36 was built totalling 2.5 million units at the BMW plants in Munich, Regensburg, Dingolfing as well as at the newly built Spartanburg factory in the US.

At the 1989 Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz presented the new SL from the R129 series. Its predecessor had been on the market for no less than 18 years, so the target group was more than ready for the new car and received it enthusiastically – so much so that early customers had to put up with a delivery period of several years. The aerodynamical wedge-shape design by Bruno Sacco won the international “Car Design Award”. Technologically, the new SL was very advanced, especially with regards to its safety features. They comprised a sensor-controlled automatic roll-over bar which would be raised within 0.3 seconds if needed, as well as integral seats.

The fabric top mechanism was no longer manually operated as it had been in the R107, but electrohydraulically, it opened and closed within 30 seconds. The aluminium hardtop weighed about 10 kg less than the one of its predecessor.

The R129 was available with a variety of engines, from 2.8 litres of capacity all the way up to 7.3 litres in the rare AMG V12 variants. A total of 204,940 examples were built over the course of 12 years, with two facelifts in 1995 and 1998, most of them equipped with V8 engines.

In 1974, Volkswagen had presented its first Golf – a great improvement over its predecessor, the VW beetle and its air-cooled engine in the rear. The Golf was, from the start, a front-wheel drive car, with water-cooled transverse engines – and hugely successful. After nine years, the second generation was introduced in 1983. The characteristic shape and basic concept remained unchanged, but the new series was slightly more rounded and significantly larger – 5,5 cm wider and a full 28 cm longer. When the 3rd generation was presented in 1991, it had again grown larger and significantly heavier. The “Variant”, a station wagon, first became available in 1994. A new convertible was also added to the lineup, finally sending the Golf I convertible into retirement after 13 years.
For the Golf III, the choice of engines started at 1.4 litres of capacity and went up to the powerful 2.9 litre VR6 producing 142 kW (193 hp). Many Golf III were sold with the new direct-injection turbo diesel engines (TDI), available as of 1993 and upgraded in 1996. Unfortunately, in terms of rust prevention and build quality, the 3rd generation couldn’t quite match its predecessor.

Automobile size, redefined

With the appearance of the new S-Class in 1991, it rained criticism: The vehicles were too heavy, not at all up to date in their megalomania – loading capacity was too low, and to top it all off, they didn’t even fit on the Sylt-shuttle trains!
Those who didn’t care about all of the above, acquired a sedan that set new standards and came with a hoist of innovations: CAN bus, voice controlled car telephony, park distance control, ESP, double glazed laminated safety glass … things that nowadays have become automotive standard were here on board for the first time. The excellent workmanship and reliability bestowed many W 140 a second career outside Germany. Models of this series were the first to be offered with V12 engines. Incidentally, the Maybachs built until 2011 were largely based on the the W 140 series.
Like all large Mercedes limousines before, the 1990s S-Class will be a sought-after classic in the foreseeable future.

Volvo P1800 S

Do you remember Roger Moore as “Simon Templar” in the TV series “The Saint”?
He always drove a white Volvo 1800. In fact, Moore liked this car so much, he bought one for private use. And now, you can, too! This Volvo P1800 S Coupe with cream white paintwork has recently been shipped back to Europe after 50 years in the US.
It comes with new bicolour (red/black) door linings, nearly new and very clean sky, red leatherette seats, all wrapped in the stylish italo-swedish body. Engine-wise, the very robust 1.8 litre 4-cylinder is installed, with an output of 71 kW (96 hp) which is sent to the wheels by means of the M41 gearbox, a 4-speed manual with electrically actuated overdrive – which makes it effectively a 5-gear. A Volvo 1800 S holds the mileage world record for passenger cars, with over 3 million miles on the first engine and gearbox, leaving no questions regarding the durability of this technology.
The overall impression of the sports coupe is pleasing, the paintwork of sub-standard quality notwithstanding, and the car is conditionally drivable. For unobstructed driving pleasure, some work will be required regarding body, undercarriage and drivetrain. The Volvo 1800 was never a common sight even when new, and is nowadays a real rarity on the streets. You’ll be sure to catch people’s eyes with this one.

Sporty Swede, the Second

Volvo’s first attempt to gain a foothold in the sports car market with the 1956 model P 1900 had been a complete disaster. The second attempt succeeded, albeit with a bumpy start: An agreement had already been reached with Karmann at Osnabrück in 1957, when VW banned the production, out of fear for competition with their own models. Production of the P 1800 therefore started with much delay towards the end of 1960 at Jensen in England. Due to quality defects, production was moved to Volvo’s own plant in Sweden in 1963.

Technically, the elegant coupe was based on the Volvo 122 S, nicknamed “Amazon”. It was said that the design came from Frua in Italy – which was only partly true, because strictly speaking, the Swede Pelle Petterson, who worked at Frua, had drawn the car.
Including the Shooting Brake “1800 ES”, available as of 1972 and known by its nickname “Snow White’s Coffin”, a total of 47,492 units of the P 1800 were built, the majority of which went to the United States.

Alfa Romeo 1750 Berlina

1970 – the year that soccer fans will remember for the “match of the century”, when Italy beat Germany 4:3 in the semi-finals – was also the year of birth for this Alfa Romeo 1750 Berlina. The Bertone-styled car looks absolutely gorgeous in its Alfa-typical red coat of paint, it has not lost a bit of its attractiveness. At some point in the past, the 1750 must have been partially restored and presents itself in a very appealing condition inside and out. Some minor scratches notwithstanding, the paint is good, as are the chrome parts, including rearview mirrors, windscreen wipers or hub caps.
A roomy interior with comfortable, recently renewed black leatherette seats, a well-kept veneer dash and centre console and a charming wooden steering wheel make for a very favourable general impression. Then there are quarter-vent windows in the front (“average Joe’s air conditioning”), a cassette radio and even automatic seat belts.
The engine compartment looks clean, it houses the 1.8 litre four-cylinder powerplant which produces 87 kW (118 hp). A top speed of 180 km/h was not to be scoffed at in the 1970s, least of all for a family sedan.
This large Alfa is fully suitable for everyday use, and it’s a picture-beautiful classic.

It looks a bit like a somewhat larger, ironed-out version of the extremely popular Alfa Romeo Giulia. And that’s precisely what it is! When Giorgetto Giugiaro at Bertone designed the Alfa Romeo 1750 Berlina, he based it on the successful 4-door sedan, but got rid of nearly all pleats and creases, giving the new car a very sleek, smooth appearance. To help save costs, many parts, even the windscreen, were shared with the Giulia or other contemporaneous Alfa models.
Only one engine was available, a 1.8 litre twin cam four-cylinder producing 87 kW (118 hp) of power, which was mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. In 1971, a 3-speed automatic became available but was rarely ordered. In the same year, a facelift brought some changes – new lights, most noteably – and the engine displacement was increased to 2.0 litres. Consequentially, the car was henceforth labelled 2000 Berlina. Those looking for a 1.8 litre engine could find it in the brand new 1972 Alfetta, which was built alongside the 2000 Berlina until 1977 when it finally replaced the Giulia derivative. By then, over 190,000 units of the 1750 / 2000 Berlina had been built – nowhere near as many as the Giulia, but a respectable number nonetheless.

Drive like Tom Selleck in “Magnum”

Folding headlights up front, clear styling by Pininfarina, a detachable targa roof in the centre, twin taillights – and THE highlight shines right behind the rear seats: a V8 carburettor with an incredible sound ranging from a gentle rattle to a mighty roar. From these ingredients, Ferrari created the 308 GTS, one of the dream cars of the 1980s. Its popularity was further increased by the popular TV detective “Magnum” driving a red one.
Early 308s, available only as closed GTB, had a fibreglass body, which was very time-consuming to produce. For that reason, it got replaced by a more conventional steel body in 1977. The Targa version appeared in the same year. From 1981, the GTS became a GTSi, a Bosch K-Jetronic was now responsible for mixture preparation instead of the carburetor system. Four-valve technology was introduced in 1982.

In June 1975, the first generation of the new BMW 3 Series (E21) was unveiled to the attending press at the Olympic Stadium in Munich. It then premiered to the general public at the Frankfurt Motor Show that same year in the 316, 318, 320 and 320i versions, all of which were offered with the M10 four-cylinder engines. This engine also served as the basis for the successful turbocharged engine in Formula 1. Only the engine with the “i” in the model designation was equipped with intake manifold injection (injection). The design for the E21 series was created by Paul Bracq, who had previously designed the dash 8 at Mercedes. By dispensing with lavish chrome ornamentation, replacing it with “matte black,” and stylistic gimmicks, the result was a timeless classic. The new 3 Series was offered only as a 2-door model and featured the so-called “shark nose” in the front design. The 320s were equipped with twin headlights, the others had only two round headlights. The interior was dominated by the dashboard facing the driver at an angle. Unlike many competitors, the chassis featured a modern McPherson front axle and a semi-trailing arm rear axle. The new production facilities at the Munich plant allowed for customized production.
