A long, long time ago, when the acronym “SUV” was unheard of and 4WD cars were rugged work-horses rather than fashionable lifestyle cars, Mercedes-Benz developed its G class. With the “G” referring to the German word “GelƤndewagen”, off-road vehicle, its envisaged field of application was clearly defined, and the conceptual design of the car was an unambiguous case of form following function. A body-on-frame construction, high ground clearance, very straight lines, plus the use of three fully locking differentials made for a vehicle that was extremely versatile even in difficult terrain. The G class, presented in 1979, was manufactured – in the true sense of the word, mostly by hand – in Austria by the Steyr-Daimler-Puch, and marketed under the Puch name in some countries. Military variants of this very reliable and highly esteemed car were commissioned around the globe. The civilian version remained in production for nearly 4 decades in largely unchanged shape, while the engines grew continually more powerful and the interior became more and more luxurious. In 2018, Mercedes-Benz re-launched an entirely new G class, which is considerably wider and larger than its predecessor, while still retaining its iconic form.

Volkswagen Scirocco II GTX

– 1989 Volkswagen Scirocco II GTX

Development of the Scirocco had begun in the early 1970s, when it was clear that the Karmann Ghia would soon need a replacement after its long production span. The new sport coupe was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and used the “A1” platform of the Golf I, which meant it featured the same transverse-mounted front engine and front wheel drive layout. The name “Scirocco” was derived from a mediterranean wind – as VW cars of the era frequently carried wind names. All Sciroccos were assembled by Karmann in Osnabrueck and had 4-cylinder petrol engines, with displacement ranging from 1.1 to 1.8 litres. In 1981, the Scirocco received a major facelift. Many would believe it was an altogether new car, but underneath, the Golf I platform continued to be used. It offered more space and better aerodynamics. In this shape, the Scirocco survived until 1992, by which time the Golf III had already been released. In total, 504,153 units were built of the Scirocco I and only 291,497 of the Scirocco II, falling short of the manufacturer’s expectations. The sports coupe was discontinued without a direct successor, only much later (2008 -2017) VW once more offered a new Scirocco.
As a little known fact: Scirocco II rear lights were used by Aston Martin in the Virage (1989-1996).

Porsche 911 Jubi (964)

In 1993, Porsche manufactured a limited number of Porsche 911 from the 964 series as a special edition to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 911 model. Technically, they were Carrera 4 turbo look coupĆ©s, with a number of features that set them apart, most noteworthy a titanium-coloured limited-edition plaque with an individual number. This Jubi, as they are affectionately referred to, bears the number 295, and it was first owned by a businessman in Saarbruecken, Germany. He left it in his will to his grandson, so it stayed in the same familiy until 2015 when the current owner bought it. He straight away treated it to a large service which included new brakes and brake pipes as well as a new battery. Altogether ā‚¬ 6,500 were spent to bring the Jubi back into good shape. The anniversary model runs on its original 17″ cup rims.
The car features a 20 mm lower ride, cup exhaust, as well as the 92 litre fuel tank, all of which was installed ex-works, plus a performance enhancement to 199 kW (280 hp). Further amenities include heated seats, air-conditioning, trip computer and sunroof. The viola-metallic paint and rubicon-grey interior, introduced specifically for the Jubi edition, look breathtakingly beautiful on this rare car. Will 295 be your new lucky number?

After 16 years of production, the highly popular “G model” of the Porsche 911 was due for a thorough makeover in 1989. The successor, which bore the internal code 964, is said to have shared no more than 15 % of its parts with model it replaced. While retaining the characteristic basic design, the 964 brought a cornucopia of technical innovations. For the first time in a 911, all wheel drive, derived from the technology carrier Porsche 959, and the Tiptronic automatic gearshift became available. Power steering, airbags as well as ABS brakes likewise found their way into the 911. The suspension was revised substantially, it now featured coil springs and shock absorbers instead of torsion bars. From the outside, the most noticeable change lay in the large, integrated bumpers, as well as in the electric rear spoiler which was raised and lowered according to the travelling speed.
In the rear, there was still the air-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine – now with twin-spark – which most commonly had 3.6 litres of displacement, though 3.3 and 3.75 litre variants were available, as well as turbo engines.
The 964 was the last 911 model which was offered as a traditional Targa with the removable roof.

Maybe the most elegant Mercedes-Benz coupƩ of all times?

As of February 1961, the coupĆ© and convertible variants of the W111 became available, initially using the same drivetrain as the sedan model 220 SE. They were referred to as 220 SEb/C. After that, engine sizes – and prices, too – of the coupĆ©s just kept going up. The 250 SE, 280 SE and 300 SE followed, and just before the end of the production run, the 350 SE.
In contrast to its predecessor, coupƩ and convertible are based on the unshortened carrier of the associated sedan and were thus a full four-seater. CoupƩ and sedan have also stylistically many similarities, but not one of the components of the four-door car could be used for the coupƩ or convertible. More than four times as many parts as for the sedan were made by hand for the coupƩs and convertibles.
These C-models were the last largely handmade Mercedes, which is why coupƩ and convertible prices were almost twice as high as that of the sedan.

Mercedes-Benz SL 300 (R129)

When Diana, Princess of Wales, dumped her Jaguar in favour of a red Mercedes-Benz SL from the R 129 series, British media was in turmoil. The princess eventually had not choice but to return the “foreign” car.
A different, nearly as beautiful red 300 SL can be yours without any media storm. It’s a 1993 model which has found its way home from Lithuania. According to the consignor, the car has gone through only two ownerships, the latter holding it for 10 years and using it only during the summer months.
The SL appears to have been completely repainted, with most of the paint still in good shape and only little visible rust. The leather interior has been renewed at some point, it is in good condition. Dashboard and faux wood centre console are well preserved and devoid of cracks.
The SL features electrically adjustable, heated seats, power windows, cruise control, a leather steering wheel, fog lights and dual airbags. It runs on Lorinser 19″ alloys, not without curb damage. The tyres are in need of replacing. A body-coloured hard top is included.
Engine compartment and boot look clean, and the car generally makes a cared-for impression.
Under the bonnet, there is the 3.0 litre six-cylinder engine installed which produces 140 kW (190 hp) of power and is coupled to a 4-speed automatic gearbox.
Get a hold of this one now, and in a few years from now you can boast that you bought the SL for very small money…

At the 1989 Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz presented the new SL from the R 129 series. Its predecessor had been on the market for no less than 18 years, so the target group was more than ready for the new car and received it enthusiastically – so much so that early customers had to put up with a delivery period of several years. The aerodynamical wedge-shape design by Bruno Sacco won the international “Car Design Award”. Technologically, the new SL was very advanced, especially with regards to its safety features. They comprised a sensor-controlled automatic roll-over bar which would be raised within 0.3 seconds if needed, as well as integral seats.
The fabric top mechanism was no longer manually operated as it had been in the R 107, but electrohydraulically, it opened and closed within 30 seconds. The aluminium hardtop weighed about 10 kg less than the one of its predecessor.
The R 129 was available with a variety of engines, from 2.8 litres of capacity all the way up to 7.3 litres in the rare AMG V12 variants. A total of 204,940 examples were built over the course of 12 years, with two facelifts in 1995 and 1998, most of them equipped with V8 engines.

Here comes the much celebrated “Vorsprung durch Technik” (advance through technology). The Audi quattro with permanent all-wheel drive and five-cylinder turbo engine was legendary from day one. It was built over a whole decade, 11,548 units in total – that’s significantly more than the originally planned 400 for racing homologation purposes! Speaking of racing: Unforgettable, how Walter Rƶhrl and his teammates kept winning rally after rally, leaving the competition for dead.
It was the discovery that a 4-wheel-drive VW Iltis had far better traction on a slippery slope than even the most powerful standard car, which led to the development of the quattro – which was given its name by one of the chief engineers, Walter Treser, at that time Director of Pre-Development.
The quattro sparked a veritable all-wheel-boom. Nobody cared that the front half was almost identical to the rather homely Audi 80… With this car, Audi had finally got a foothold in the premium segment. And today? Well-maintained specimens are rare, because as is so often the case with performance cars, they were tuned and tinkered with till the cows came home.
A great vehicle, all the fun on the road plus a huge potential regarding the price development.

At the Frankfurt Motor Show of 1961, BMW had presented its “New Class”, a very modern 4-door sedan. Buoyed by its success, the company as of 1966 started producing a 2-door version with a shortened wheelbase. This was to become the starting point for many generations of compact executive cars by BMW. The so-called “02 series” is named after an originally unofficial appendix to the model designation “1600-2”, which as of 1971 found its way into the official nomenclature, when the cars were sold as 1502, 1602, 1802 and 2002, the numbers roughly corresponding to their engine capacity. All 02 series cars came with four-cylinder engines, performance-increased variants were named “ti” and “tii”. In 1973, the 2002 turbo with 125 kW (170 hp) of power marked the top of the range. Apart from the standard 2-door sedan, there also was a hatchback model called Touring (1971-1974), and two types of convertible, both built by Baur: The full convertible (1968-1971) was replaced for torsional rigidity reasons by a Targa-style model with rollover bars, available from 1971-1975. The 2002tii will be remembered for its successes in racing. A lesser known fact is that two battery-electric concept cars were built for the 1972 Olympic Games.

– Audi 80 GLS series I
– from the last year of B1 production, 1978
– delivered and always registered in Germany
– reportedly just two long-time owners from new
– garaged for many years, unwarranted mileage of only 25,100 km
– 1.6 litre petrol engine with 63 kW (85 hp) and 4-speed manual gearbox
– low kerb weight of only 845 kg
– authentic charme of the 70s: reseda green paintwork and beige fabric interior
– a cheap everyday classic or an addition for an Audi collection

It may well have been the car that saved the VW group in the 1970s: The Audi 80 with its longitudinally mounted, all new water-cooled four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive was presented in 1972 as the successor to the Audi F103. The car was lightweight and economical, which made it a sales success in the aftermath of the oil crisis. The Audi 80 also served as the basis for the VW Passat B1, which was identical up to the B-pillar, but featured a fastback instead of the 80’s three-box desgin. In 1976 a facelifted version, internally named type 82, brought mild adaptations to resemble the Audi 100.
By 1978, one million Audi 80 had been built, an event marked by a “Millionaire” limited edition.
In 1978, the second generation (“B2”) followed. Building on the success of its predecessor, the 2nd generation was more of an evolution than a revolution: slightly larger, more modern styling by Giugiaro, it made the Audi 80 fit for another 8 years in production. As of 1980, the Audi 80 was also offered as a 1.6 litre diesel engine. One year later, a turbocharged version followed. The B2 also introduced the quattro 4-wheel drive and the legendary 5-cylinder engine in this segment. In the north-American market, the Audi 80 B2 was sold as Audi 4000. The B2 also formed the basis for the Coupe, Quattro as well as for the Audi 90. In 1986, it was superseded by the all-new B3.
