The Mercedes-Benz roadsters of the R107 series replaced the W113 “pagoda” in 1971. While the outgoing model only featured 6-cylinder engines, Mercedes had planned the new car with enough room for larger power plants under the bonnet, obviously with the North-American market as their main target – and indeed, that is where the SL proved most successful. Over a production run of a full 18 years, a total of 237,287 convertibles were built at the factory’s Sindelfingen plant, most of them equipped with V8 engines of varying capacity as 350, 380, 420, 450, 500 and 560 SL. 6-cylinder models were also offered, originally as 280 SL from 1974-1985 and later as 300 SL from 1985-1989.
The 560 SL was produced exclusively for the Japanese, American and Australian markets. Even faster, however, was the 500 SL with its European specifications, which was not sold in the US due to emission restraints.
Through continuous innovation over the many model years, the R107 set plenty of standards. When it was finally replaced by the R129 in 1989, it was already becoming one of the perennial automobile classics.

The Pagoda – a design classic par excellence!

When presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963, the W113 had the difficult task of replacing two models at a time, the 190 SL as well as the 300 SL. A task that was almost equivalent to the quadrature of the circle, but was solved brilliantly. Because of its smooth surfaces, the spacious interior and the absence of decorative elements, it came across as very “masculine” and made the predecessors with their rounded styling look outdated.
It was available as 230 SL (1963-1967), 250 SL (1967) and 280 SL (1968-1971), built with either manual or automatic transmission, to a total of 48,912 vehicles. Because of its slightly concave hardtop, available as an accessory, it was nicknamed Pagoda.
The W113 was suitable for any occasion – be it for the opera, the golf course or the small shopping – and the main thing: it looked good on you!

The car manufacturer Opel needed a vehicle to close the gap between the Kadett and the Rekord. Production of the Ascona model, whose name came from a town in Italian-speaking Switzerland, therefore began in 1970. This mid-size car had an independent body, while the engine came from the Opel Kadett. Three generations of the car were produced during the 18-year production period: The Ascona A was available as a two- and four-door sedan and as a three-door station wagon, each in different equipment lines. The engines ranged from 1.2 to 1.9 litres and produced between 44 kW (60 hp) and 66 kW (90 hp). In 1975, the era of the Ascona B began. The body became larger and the car, now only available as a saloon, was given a more noble design. From 1981, the Generation C was produced, now with front-wheel drive and a transversely mounted engine. For a time, this was the best-selling car in the FRG. Several coachbuilders also modified the two-door notchback saloon into a convertible. In Germany, the Hammond & Thiede convertible, built by Karosseriewerk Voll in Würzburg, was available through the Opel dealer network. Two model updates were made in 1984 and 1986 with new headlights and lamps. In 1988, the Ascona was replaced by the Opel Vectra A.

Mercedes-Benz SL 300 (R129)

  • In

When Diana, Princess of Wales, dumped her Jaguar in favour of a red Mercedes-Benz SL from the R 129 series, British media was in turmoil. The princess eventually had not choice but to return the “foreign” car.
A different, nearly as beautiful red 300 SL can be yours without any media storm. It’s a 1993 model which has found its way home from Lithuania. According to the consignor, the car has gone through only two ownerships, the latter holding it for 10 years and using it only during the summer months.
The SL appears to have been completely repainted, with most of the paint still in good shape and only little visible rust. The leather interior has been renewed at some point, it is in good condition. Dashboard and faux wood centre console are well preserved and devoid of cracks.
The SL features electrically adjustable, heated seats, power windows, cruise control, a leather steering wheel, fog lights and dual airbags. It runs on Lorinser 19″ alloys, not without curb damage. The tyres are in need of replacing. A body-coloured hard top is included.
Engine compartment and boot look clean, and the car generally makes a cared-for impression.
Under the bonnet, there is the 3.0 litre six-cylinder engine installed which produces 140 kW (190 hp) of power and is coupled to a 4-speed automatic gearbox.
Get a hold of this one now, and in a few years from now you can boast that you bought the SL for very small money…

At the 1989 Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz presented the new SL from the R 129 series. Its predecessor had been on the market for no less than 18 years, so the target group was more than ready for the new car and received it enthusiastically – so much so that early customers had to put up with a delivery period of several years. The aerodynamical wedge-shape design by Bruno Sacco won the international “Car Design Award”. Technologically, the new SL was very advanced, especially with regards to its safety features. They comprised a sensor-controlled automatic roll-over bar which would be raised within 0.3 seconds if needed, as well as integral seats.
The fabric top mechanism was no longer manually operated as it had been in the R 107, but electrohydraulically, it opened and closed within 30 seconds. The aluminium hardtop weighed about 10 kg less than the one of its predecessor.
The R 129 was available with a variety of engines, from 2.8 litres of capacity all the way up to 7.3 litres in the rare AMG V12 variants. A total of 204,940 examples were built over the course of 12 years, with two facelifts in 1995 and 1998, most of them equipped with V8 engines.

Mercedes-Benz 500 SL

An impressive Mercedes-Benz 500 SL is being offered here. The exact history of the vehicle is not known and it seems to be a European delivery, as can also be seen by the bumpers and headlights.
The mighty 5.0 litre V8 produces 170 kW (231 hp) and is mated to the 4-speed automatic gearbox.
With its dark blue paintwork and tan MB tex interior, the SL still looks elegant after 30 years. The convertible top in matching dark blue is in an acceptable condition regarding the age of the vehicle. Traces of a not very professionally repaired accident damage remain visible on the right hand side of the car.
The SL features the 2+2 seater arrangement. Driver and passenger seats appear to have been re-upholstered given the good condition. Dashboard and centre console are slightly cracked, but altogether the car is in an acceptable condition regarding its mileage of over 220,000 mls.
A rare factory option in 1984 was the driver’s airbag, which is installed here, as well as the climate control (currently not working). Owner’s manual and service booklet – the latter in French – are included with this interesting convertible, which is being sold as a restoration object due to the considerably required repairs on body and mechanical parts.

A dream of automobile! From 1971 – 1989 the R107 founded the unbeatable reputation of the brand Mercedes-Benz in the open two-seater segment.

The top model 500 SL – equipped with the 450 SLC 5.0 known 5.0 litre V8 engine (M 117) – replaced the 450 SL and from the beginning with its 240, later 245 hp (or 223 hp with catalytic converter). This brings the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds and delivers a top speed of 225 km/h (with catalyst 215 km/h). The production of the R 107 series ended in August 1989, more than 18 years after it had started. This makes it one of the longest-built chassis from Mercedes-Benz. A total of 237,287 open vehicles were produced at the Sindelfingen main plant.

This vehicle set plenty of standards through continuous innovation and has become one of the eternal automobile classics.

A must-have for classic car connoisseurs!

BMW 325i Cabrio (E30)

– 1987 BMW 325i convertible from the E30 series
– Very chic colour combination with royal blue metallic paint and beige interior
– Matching softtop
– delivered and always registered in Germany, within the same family for 23 years
– 2.5 litre inline 6-cylinder engine with 125 kW (170 hp) and automatic gearbox
– Power windows front and rear
– Wooden Nardi steering wheel
– Heated seats
– Windbreaker
– Original BMW 15″ alloy wheels
– Original owner’s manual and service booklet available
– German registration documents

BMW’s 2nd generation of the 3 series, the E30, replaced its popular predecessor in 1982. With its straight lines, Claus Luthe – who had penned the timeless NSU Ro 80 – created a car that perfectly catered to the taste of its era. The handsome and well-built cars with their wonderfully smooth engines were originally available as 2- and 4-door sedans. As early as 1983, the Baur company at Stuttgart produced a convertible which was distributed through BMW’s official retailers. With its fixed window frames and the roll bar, it featured typical 1980s styling cues. Two years later, BMW presented their own convertible – the first in 15 years. And how different it looked in its completely open state, devoid of the aforementioned bars and beams.
It became an immediate success. Over 140,000 units were built until production ceased in 1993, three years after the launch of the E36 sedan.
30 years after its presentation, the E30 convertible has already become a sought-after classic. It is getting exceedingly difficult to find a well-preserved, original specimen – simply because many have suffered dearly at the hands of a financially inflexible clientele of 3rd and 4th hand owners attraced by the racing qualities of the E30 3 series.

Volvo P1800 E

Swedish steel with Italian chic
– 2.0 liter in-line four-cylinder engine with 91 kW (124 hp)
– 4-speed manual gearbox with electric overdrive
– Traceable speedometer reading
– 3 vehicle owners in the family only
– First registration in Sweden, transferred to the UK in 1981
– Bodywork overhauled and repainted eight years ago
– Blaupunkt radio, rear window heating, oil and coolant temperature display, oil pressure display

The Volvo P1800, a Volvo stylish like an Italian Gran Turismo, the driving experience like an English sports car and above all as robust as a Swedish “tank”. Commissioned by Frua, Italian design studio, the then 25-year-old Petterson presented his design as early as 1957, which was approved many years later. According to the original plans, the car was to be produced in cooperation with Karmann, but this fell through due to Volkswagen’s business relations with the German company. Instead, the British company Jensen took over the production of the car. A company called Pressed Steel produced the bodies, and final assembly took place at Jensen. During 1963, Volvo moved production and assembly to various Swedish plants. Technically, the P1800’s shortened platform and mechanicals were based on the reliable Volvo Amazon. The P1800 featured rear-wheel drive, a front engine, and a rear rigid axle. The first 4-cylinder engine, designated B18, also came from the Volvo Amazon. With the introduction of electronic fuel injection in 1970, the P1800 coupe was now designated the 1800E.
In 1972, the last coupe of a total of 39,778 units, a Volvo 1800E, rolled off the production line.

Triumph TR3A

Flowing lines, chromed spoke wheels, doors so low you could reach out and touch the road if you ever felt you wanted to… this can only be a British roadster. And not just any: What we’ve got here is a Triumph TR3A, and a truly attractive one at that. This specimen was built in 1959 and has gone through four ownerships altogether, the current holding it in his possession since 2001. A significant amount of invoices testify to regular servicing and maintenance, in total, over € 23,000 has been spent on this vehicle in recent years. Accordingly, a Classic Data appraisal states that this Triumph is in condition 2+, has a market value of € 31,000 and a replacement value of over € 35,800. The 2.0 litre engine was revised in 2015, it produces no less than 74 kW (100 hp) of power – remarkable figures for a 1950s sports car. Between engine and gearbox, a slight oil leak can be seen, otherwise the engine looks clean and is said to run smooth. The fiery red paintwork is in good shape, as are the chrome parts, with only slight traces of rust. The convertible top has once been replaced and is in a good condition, as is the beige leather interior. In 2011, the steering was rebuilt to use a rack-and-pinion system. The Triumph comes with German registration documents, and historic plates.

A sales success, especially in the important American market – and the winner of many prestigious car races of its era: the Triumph TR2 helped to establish the reputation of the Standard Motor Company of Coventry, England, as maker of sportive open two seaters. With its four-cylinder engine producing 67 kW (91 hp) of power from 1,991 cc of capacity, this roadster was extraordinarily powerful and fast for that time. 8,636 copies were built between 1953 and 1955. In 1955, the next generation, named TR3, was ready. It featured disk brakes and larger carburettors, tried and tested on the race track. A 1957 facelift brought a wider radiator grille, a boot lock and exterior door handles. These vehicles are nowadays referred to as “TR3A”, although this designation was never officially used. Similarly, the last variant of the TR3, available in 1962 only, while the succeeding TR4 was already being sold, is today referred to as “TR3B”. In that last model year, a larger, 2,138 cc engine was being offered. Across all variants, approximately 74,800 TR3s were built, making it one of the most successful Triumph models.
TR2 and early (up to 1957) TR3 models are suitable for the Mille Miglia.

Volkswagen Golf IV 2.8 V6 4-Motion

– Permanent all wheel drive

In 1974, Volkswagen presented the Golf – a great improvement over its predecessor, the Beetle, with its air-cooled rear-mounted engine. The Golf was a front-wheel drive car from the start, with water-cooled, transversely mounted engines – and a huge success.
In October 1997, the Golf IV, the fourth VW Golf series (factory code 1J, was presented. Compared to its predecessor, the Golf III, VW made forward-looking improvements to the quality of the bodywork. The sheet metal parts are electrolytically galvanized and enabled VW to provide a guarantee against rust-through for up to twelve years. In addition, the gaps between doors and hoods have been reduced.
The Golf IV V6 4Motion was introduced in 1999. It was the most powerful and fastest in the Golf IV series, outperforming even a GTI. The newly developed V6 engine with 4-valve technology draws its output of 150 kW (204 hp) from a displacement of 2.8 liters.
With the 4Motion permanent all-wheel drive system, the drive forces are transmitted to the road by four wheels instead of just two. Each individual wheel is automatically adapted to the respective surface. This ensures optimum distribution of forces and makes this Golf a safe vehicle. It was replaced by the Golf V from November 2003.
