For the connoisseur, these cars may well be the most underrated exotics ever. Perhaps the only mass produced 4 seater, mid engined V8 convertible in automotive history, born and bred at the renowned Maranello stable. Despite all this, prices for these 1980s beauties have not yet skyrocketed the way other Ferraris have. This specimen, a US import, is a QV convertible built in 1985, making it a late model from the last year of production. It is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission with the typical slotted gate shifting mechanism for a sports car feeling of the purest kind. The Mondial runs on the reportedly original rims with Michelin TRX tyres and comes with air conditioning, power windows, a sports steering wheel and a contemporary radio.
The car has been completely repainted in Germany and has hardly been driven since. The black convertible top is in good shape, as is the interior with black dashboard, beige leather and bicolour door linings.
The replacement value of this Mondial in condition 2 was recently rated by Classic Data at € 57,000. All in all a Ferrari that enables you to get in and drive off straight away, as it already has valid technical approval until 05/2018 and historic plates. And remember, it is one of only 629 units built of this exotic Italian sports car!
The Ferrari for the Family
It turned out longer and wider than its predecessor and offered sufficient space even for rear-seat passengers – while being a true mid-engine sports car. This combination is highly unusual, if not unique for a production car, even more so for one available as a convertible.
Pininfarina drew the elongate lines of the Mondial 8, which was first presented at the Geneva show in 1980. The low-pollutant V8 with 214 hp was not considered powerful enough by all friends of the house, which led Ferrari to come up with the Quattrovalvole, some two years or 703 vehicles later, boasting 240 hp for the desired extra bit of oomph. Of this, a total of 1,773 units were built, among them 629 convertibles.
The year 1985 brought a major facelift, since then the Mondial was offered as a 3.2 delivering 270 hp. In this form, a total of 987 coupés and 810 convertibles were produced until 1988.
