Preliminary work on the Type 14 began at Karmann in Osnabrück in the spring of 1953, when the Italian design studio Ghia was commissioned to design a coupé based on the Beetle. The prototype presented at the end of 1953 impressed the clients and was also well received in Wolfsburg: The series development of a 2+2-seater coupé was decided and production of the Karmann Ghia started in August 1955.
The Karmann Ghia Cabriolet was presented at the 38th IAA. The vehicle, which was produced in Osnabrück from November 1, 1957, cost DM 8,250.
With this vehicle, Karmann combined the solid technology of the Beetle with the elegant bodywork of Italian design. The Karmann Ghia was fitted with a front anti-roll bar from the outset in order to reduce lateral tilt and oversteer. The front seating area was enlarged thanks to the wider body compared to the Beetle. The running boards were dispensed with.
A total of around 445,000 units were built, including 80,897 convertibles. Many of these went to the USA.
