lBased on the R 107, Mercedes created a sports coupé with the model series designation C 107, which was presented for the first time in 1971 and marketed as the SLC. The SLC had a wheelbase a full 36 cm longer than the SL, 5 seats, was slightly heavier than the convertible, but the better drag coefficient made up for this disadvantage and the top speed was identical. Styling features include the very large, curved rear window and the side slats on the rear windows – born out of necessity in order to be able to fully retract the windows.
The six-cylinder M 110 and the eight-cylinder M 116 and M 117 engines were available. The most powerful variant, the 450 SLC 5.0 or, from 1980, the 500 SLC, offered 176 kW (240 hp).
The coupé was produced for 10 years – still a long time, albeit considerably shorter than the 18 years of the R 107. 62,888 units were built during this time – considerably fewer than were built of the open-top variant.
