For many of his friends, this is the ultimate version of the VW bus: the Volkswagen Type 2 (T3), as it is officially called, the 3rd generation of VW’s ever-popular minibus. It still has the engine where they think it belongs: in the rear. Early T3s even had the identical air-cooled engines of their predecessor, although the new bus was significantly more spacious and not insignificantly heavier. Diesel engines were introduced in the T3 from 1981 and a new generation of water-cooled boxer engines (“water boxer”) from 1982. Regular further developments such as fuel injection or catalytic converters kept the T3 up-to-date. In 1985, the all-wheel drive version, known as the Syncro, was introduced.
The T3 also offered a wide choice of body styles: Transporter, flatbed, double-cab flatbed, as well as buses of various equipment lines up to the popular Multivan introduced in 1985. However, the favorite of all camping enthusiasts was the Westfalia conversion: a well-equipped motorhome with a pop-up roof.
The successor T4 was launched in 1990, with a front engine and front-wheel drive. Nevertheless, the T3 was built in South Africa for a further 13 years, until the end of T4 production in Germany!
