With the acquisition of the Dixi-Werke in Eisenach in 1928, BMW, until then a manufacturer of aircraft engines and motorcycles, had made its entry into automobile manufacturing. BMW’s first car, the Dixi version of the Austin Seven built under license, was gradually developed and improved until it was finally equipped with swing axle suspension. Then in 1933 came the first true BMW – the six-cylinder 303. Lacking the resources of larger and more established competitors, BMW took an evolutionary approach to model development, combining different models. For example, the 326 used the body of the intermediate 329 model, which was mechanically identical to the 1934 319. Introduced in 1936, the 326 was a groundbreaking model of immense significance and the first BMW to use a ladder frame with box section instead of the traditional tubular frame, while torsion bar rear suspension was another first for the Bavarian manufacturer. Boring the engine block by 1 mm increased displacement to 1,971 cc and raised maximum output to 50 hp. Other developments included hydraulic brakes and a four-speed transmission with freewheeling in first and second gear, which allowed clutchless gear changes.
