The XJ can be considered Sir William Lyon’s masterpiece. It was the last car drawn by the Jaguar co-founder, and what he created in 1968 proved to be enduring: The luxury sedan was built for 24 years with only minor modifications to the body shape. The XJ not only replaced the S models, but the 420 and Mk II right along with it; it became the only Jaguar saloon and one of the best-known British cars ever. Initially available only as the XJ6, the 12-cylinder XJ12 version followed in 1972, at the time the only four-door production saloon with 12 cylinders.
The first major facelift, for the 1974 model year, brought raised bumpers and a resulting flatter grille, making the XJ even sleeker and more elegant.
In 1979, there was another facelift that included a careful redesign by Pininfarina but largely retained Sir Lyon’s original shape. Approximately 318,000 XJ6s and XJ12s were built over the entire production span. One of the XJ’s unique features is that it has two separate gasoline tanks on either side of the trunk, each with its own chrome fuel filler opening, and a dashboard-mounted changeover switch.
