At the 1981 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, visitors marveled at the successor to the first VW Polo series. The hatchback version, comparable to an estate car, was initially the only model available. A spacious trunk could be converted into an impressive load area by folding down the rear seat. VW expanded the series in February 1982 with the new edition of the notchback variant “Derby”. The third body variant, the coupé, followed in August of the same year. The model variant “G40” was the most powerful Polo Coupé from August 1985. With the engine output of 115 hp or 85 KW from the 1.3-liter engine, VW also capped the upper performance limit at the same time. The G40 with KAT was thus limited at 113 hp. These power limits were necessary because a new development of a more powerful transmission did not provide the production budget. These first Polo II G40 are today among the most sought-after models of the 86C.
