In the 1970s, under the leadership of Rudolf Leiding, CEO of VW-Brazil, a team of engineers developed the SP2 sports car under the working name of Project X. The project was initially presented as a model study in March 1971. Initially a model study, the project was presented at the German industrial fair in Sao Paulo in March 1971. A year later, production of the car began at VW partner Karmann in Brazil. The chic coupé was built on the platform of the Brazilian VW 1600 Variant and many components from the VW shelf. The front axle came from the Beetle, the four-cylinder boxer engine with flat radiator and the rear axle from the VW Type 3. Weighing just under 900 kilograms, 4.22 metres long and 1.16 metres high, the sleek shape of the two-door car is characterised by its compact size. Under the bonnet in the front and accessible via a large flap in the rear, there are two luggage compartments totalling 345 litres. Additional luggage can be stored on the rear seat. The many good features of the SP2 were not enough to make it a great success, so production was stopped in 1976 after about 11,000 units. 670 of these were exported. Anyone who owns an SP2 today can consider themselves lucky. In the meantime, this VW speciality is being traded at a high price.
