A great opportunity to own a sports coupe with mid-engine

At the Tokyo Motor Show in 1983, Toyota presented a small sports car. This was a wedge-shaped coupe with a mid-engine. Comparable to the super sports cars of the time, only a bit more compact. This prototype was then developed into the MR2. It was the first Japanese mid-engine sports car to be built in series. Certainly, the Japanese automaker was inspired by the European mid-engine cars of Lotus and especially by the Fiat X1/9.
The designation MR2 stands for “Midship Runabout Two-seater” or “Midengined Rearwheel-Drive Two-seater”. There were 3 series of the MR2, which all had the mid-engine and the rear-wheel drive in common. The first two series were available as Targa and Coupé, both had folding headlights. The coupe was delivered in Europe exclusively with the removable glass roof. The Toyota MR2 W1 has about one ton of unloaded weight and achieves with the 1.6 L double camshaft four-cylinder engine, which was also found in the Corolla of the E80 series, considerable driving performance. About 300,000 vehicles of the first two series were sold worldwide. For a mid-engine sports car, this is certainly a remarkable number. A first generation Toyota MR2 is well worth owning.
