Maybach Motorenbau was, next to Horch and Mercedes-Benz, one of the top three car manufacturers of pre-world war II Germany. The company had been founded by Wilhelm Maybach in 1909 and started selling luxury vehicles in 1921. After the war, production was never resumed. Mercedes-Benz acquired the brand as early as 1960, but it wasn’t until 1997 that they presented the first new luxury concept car under the Maybach name. It went on sale in 2002 and came in two available variants: The more driver-oriented 57 / 57 S and the long-wheelbase version 62 / 62 S, which measured 6.20 m in length.
Both models came with state-of-the art V12 biturbo engines, the S versions offering incredible 1,000 Nm of torque. The chassis was based on the Mercedes-Benz series W140, which was the S class dating back to 1991, while the electronic components were essentially taken over from the W220 series (S-Class as of 1998). While these luxury cars marked the absolute pinnacle of automotive engineering, sales remained behind the manufacturer’s expectations which led to the discontinuation of these models in 2013 with hardly more than 3,000 units built.
