Alpina Burkhard Bovensiepen GmbH & Co. KG is a small series automobile manufacturer located in Buchloe in Ostallgäu. This manufacturer is officially registered in Flensburg at the Federal Motor Transport Authority. In the 1960s, Alpina was already a successful tuning company with BMW AG passenger car models, which were also successful in touring car racing.
Alpina modified many components on the body, interior, engine and chassis.
Based on the BMW 328i and 330i of the E46 series, the Alpina B3 was produced in Buchloe. The body variants offered, saloon, coupé, convertible and touring, corresponded to the model range in exactly the same way as the E46 models available ex works. The grey cast iron engine block from the US version of the E36, taken over from the M3, served as the basis. With the changes and modifications made to the E46 factory models, performance figures were achieved that are still impressive today. If the BMW M3 already “hit the rev limiter” at a top speed of 250 km/h, the B3 was allowed to reach 270 km/h. The acceleration values were also close to those of the E36. The acceleration values were also close to the M3 values. In some tests, even better values were achieved than those stated ex works. The equipment variants corresponded to those of the BMW E46 and could be supplemented with various additional Alpina specialities.
