Based on the R107, Mercedes created a sports coupé with the model series designation C107, which was first presented in 1971 and marketed as the SLC. The SLC had a wheelbase a full 36 cm longer than the SL, 5 seats, was slightly heavier than the convertible, but the better drag coefficient made up for this disadvantage, the top speed was identical. Styling features were the very large, curved rear window and the side louvres on the rear windows – born of necessity to allow the windows to be fully recessed.
The engines available were the six-cylinder M 110 and the eight-cylinder M 116 and M 117. The most powerful variant, the 450 SLC 5.0 or, from 1980, the 500 SLC, offered 176 kW (240 hp).
The Coupé was produced for 10 years – still a long time, although considerably shorter than the 18 years of the R107. During this time, 62,888 units were produced – considerably fewer than were built of the open-top variant.
