The fourth and last model in the Audi 80 series, the Audi 80 B4, was officially presented in September 1991 as the successor to the Audi 80 B3. With the modified front end, bonnet with integrated radiator grille, as on the Audi 100 C4 and Audi V8, the new model was already recognisable externally by the bumpers painted in body colour.
The new twist-beam rear axle made it possible to integrate a horizontal tank. This allowed a smooth, deep luggage compartment and a fold-down rear seat back. An estate model, the Audi 80 Avant, was then introduced in mid-1992. Audi used the term Avant to describe various estate car models with a steep rear end. The Audi station wagons with the Avant name were the first to make their mark on the lifestyle station wagon market segment and made history with the advertising slogan: “Beautiful station wagons are called Avant”.
In addition to the five-cylinder engines from the Audi 90, V6 engines were offered for the first time, initially the 2.8 l, 128 kW and from 1992 the 2.6 l. 110 kW, were offered. Externally, the six-cylinder models were distinguished by the indicator lights integrated in the front bumper and the headlights.
The Audi 80 Avant was built until the end of 1995. Its successor was the Audi A4 (B5).
