As a result of a design project from 1976, Toyota first presented the MR2 as “the brother of the Celica and the Supra” at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1983.
The Toyota MR2 is a small, two-seater sports car with a mid-engine.
The abbreviation MR2 stands for “Midship Runabout Two-seater” or “Midengined Rearwheel-Drive Two-Seater”. This vehicle concept was based heavily on the European mid-engine sports cars from Lotus, the small Fiat X1 / 9 and the Porsche 914.
At the same time, the MR2 was the first series-produced Japanese car with a mid-engine.
Driven by a lively 1.6 liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine with 16 valves and 91 kW (124 hp), with a regulated three-way catalytic converter, an empty weight of 1,080 kg and a weight distribution of 45 percent at the front and 55 percent at the rear, this agile sports car offers real driving pleasure.
As is typical for mid-engine sports cars, the MR2 has two separate luggage compartments, one in the front and one in the rear. At the German Toyota dealers in March 1985 the 3.95 meter short and only 1.25 meter high sports coupé appeared.
