The Porsche 924 had been designed as the successor to the VW-Porsche 914. When Volkswagen terminated the project, Porsche went ahead on their own and launched the 4-cylinder sports car in 1976. It was the marque’s first transaxle model to go on sale, beating the 8-cylinder 928 by several months. With its Audi-sourced 4-cylinder engine and other components from the Volkswagen shelf, the car was reasonably cheap for a Porsche – a fact which, in retrospect, may have saved the company during the 1970s oil crisis. The car was an instant sales success, notwithstanding the criticism that it was underpowered – a claim which held true in particular for the US models which had a reduced power output to comply with pollution laws. The default european-specs 924 got 92 kW (125 hp) from 2.0 litres of displacement, which in combination of the light curb weight of just 1,080 kg sufficed for a top speed of 204 km/h. As of 1979, a Turbo version offered significantly more power. For the last three years of the production run, the 924 S came with a 2.5 litre engine. All in all, around 150,000 units were built. It needs to be mentioned that the 924 – with power enhanced engines – also had a successful career in motorsports.
