The Fiat 130, which arrived on the market in time for the brand’s 70th anniversary, was the successor to the Fiat 2300. The sedan was at its time the largest and most luxurious in the company’s history. Its body shape resembled the smaller Fiat 128, but had a sumptous amount of chrome trim added. The Fiat 130 originally featured a 2.9 litre V6 engine with 103 kW (140 hp), and one year later an upgraded version that offered 118 kW (160 PS). Top speed then reached 190 km/h. It had been developed by Aurelio Lampredi, a engine designer who had gained international fame through his V12 Ferrari engines. In 1971 the 2nd generation of the beautiful sedan appeared, flanked by a coupe variant which was manufactured at the Italian design studio Pininfarina. The version , while sharing the identical wheelbase as the sedan, measured an additional 10 cm in length. In the early 1970s a station wagon prototype was developed, which never made it into serial production. In 1977, production was halted after not even 19,500 units, which were loved by politicians and celebrities alike. Due to the modest sales success, Fiat ended its involvement in the luxury car segment.
