Development of the Scirocco had begun in the early 1970s, when it was clear that the Karmann Ghia would soon need a replacement after its long production span. The new sport coupe was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and used the “A1” platform of the Golf I, which meant it featured the same transverse-mounted front engine and front wheel drive layout. The name “Scirocco” was derived from a mediterranean wind – as VW cars of the era frequently carried wind names. All Sciroccos were assembled by Karmann in Osnabrueck and had 4-cylinder petrol engines, with displacement ranging from 1.1 to 1.8 litres. In 1981, the Scirocco received a major facelift. Many would believe it was an altogether new car, but underneath, the Golf I platform continued to be used. It offered more space and better aerodynamics. In this shape, the Scirocco survived until 1992, by which time the Golf III had already been released. In total, 504,153 units were built of the Scirocco I and only 291,497 of the Scirocco II, falling short of the manufacturer’s expectations. The sports coupe was discontinued without a direct successor, only much later (2008 -2017) VW once more offered a new Scirocco.
As a little known fact: Scirocco II rear lights were used by Aston Martin in the Virage (1989-1996).
